I'd just say social autists with no desire and little tolerance for an interaction like the OP. I don't think it's wild to say most people on /ck/ want the waiter to:
1. Approach, ask for drink, possibly mention specials if there are any, and leave.
2. Come back in a few minutes or when we appear ready and ask for order, and leave.
3. Provide refills until order(s) arrive, and ask if we need anything with order.
4. Provide bill once we appear done or close to it, and take card/cash/whatever and process it while getting ready to leave.

Anything more has to be done by someone with a real sense of dealing with curmudgeons like us to be pleasing or at least neutral.
It's not being an asshole, it's just being blunt and maybe unfun.
