It is HIGHLY dependent on where you get it. The picrel is from a place in Trenton NJ and I have never had pizza remotely like it anywhere else (on a completely different level and has a very specific taste from the sauce tomatoes), grew up in NYC and there's some decent pizza there. Now I live in rural NY and the pizza is pretty shit. Even places where customers literally say wow delicious pizza on a regular basis, to my tastebuds it's pretty garbage.
My guess is when I had pepperoni as a kid though it was from Famiglia which is the really common chain in NYC. Their pizza is pretty good.
