Is kombucha a meme? Why shouldn’t I make it at home? It gets a lot of hype to little evidence. I want a probiotic I can make myself.

Why do you ask?

I had a glass and it tasted good, it seems super easy to make. Just curious if it is worthwhile to make or not.

I make it every single week anon, have been making batches weekly for almost a full year now. It saves you money if you like the taste and gives you complete freedom over how sour or sweet you like it, different juice flavors, etc. Not to mention I find it fun, and I like to have stuff that's carbonated, but don't drink soda. (btw, if you grow too much scoby to contain give it away or mix with fruit in a food processor and make fruit jerky out of it.) I may not be the most knowledgeable person about kombucha on the planet but i'd be happy to answer anyone's questions about it

Memes aside, do you notice any health benefits?

Not a ton, but some. It does make my stomach feel good after I drink it, as does other probiotic foods like yogurt or sauerkraut, but other than that I don't see it doing much else. I just drink it because I'd like to drink something other than coffee or water that's relatively healthy for me, and it's the cheapest carbonated option I could think of, not to mention I find it fun.

I listened to a podcast where the gust was a guy pretty close to the field and he said probiotics are probably a meme, and you are better off just licking your fingers every now again (for immunity and stuff).

Id make it because its cool to be able to brew something.

Also, I hear that the SCOBI disk is a meme, and that the kombucha itself is the SCOBI, the disk is relatively inert. just gelatin or whatever its made of.

The pellicle isn't a meme, but you are correct that it's not the scoby. The scoby is all the dark strands in the liquid and the tea and the, the pellicle is made up primarily of cellulose from the bacteria and acts as a shield from dust, flies, or anything that could contaminate the fermentation. Kombucha fermented without a scoby ferments at a much slower rate and is a bit more prone to molding.
