I'm new-ish to good scotch but whats a good scotch that's nice, smoky and peaty that won't break the bank?
I've developed a longing for that peaty smoke but Bowmore is a lot of money

Started drinking whisky for about one month, and here's my experience so far:
>Jura Journey: mildest so far, less smoky, sweety, very vanilla and creamy
>Talisker Skye: a little bit smoky but sweet, creamy and vanilla, gives a more agressive irritation due to higher alcohol content
>Laphroaig 10 years: very smoky, like drinking water in ashtray; aftertaste feels like disinfectant
>Penderyn Legend: Welsh single malt, slight floral apple smell, white wine feel with hint of apple taste, aftertaste like creamy vanilla

heard that these recently got discontinued so I didn't waste time getting one. to me the color is definitely lighter than usual for 15 years(some say a little longer) fully sherry maturation in European oak and I've heard that the "no more than 800 bottles" are supposed to be First Fill casks. taste is good, but really not so fruity/sweet for a Speyside especially when compared to the new Glendronach Revival and not necessarily what I would say is indicative of $140, at least not yet.

the Doublewood I finished over the course of a year and a half was basically identical in terms of fruit. I think its just The Balvenie's character being overall more subtle.

We dubbed Glendronach "Very berry" and Balvenie as "Panettone bread pudding". She was no fan of Dailuaine or Old Pultney with Glenallachie 15 and Octave Brackla tied for third and Glenallachie 10 Batch 6 4th, but she literally only buys Jack as a daily drinker.

Machir Bay is good, but pretty basic. heard it jumped about $10USD recently and its definitely silly pricing even if they are doing it all by hand and etc., I wasn't thrilled with the price being in the mid $50's and considering nothing they offer is much over 10 years old I dont see the point of the premium cost. Peat and smoke are adequate, not really a fan of them anyway. Just a little bit more sweetness is OK, but I would like more richer texture and more layers of the aftertaste.

It's not really an advantage, just an observation of a trend about quality.
Independents buy the spirit of the distiller and then age it themselves. They tend to use good / different barrels, release at a higher abv, and compete against other independents (or if the original distiller has a nice cask higher abv product, that as well).
However you typically pay a premium for this.

A major possible benefit is that some distilleries only ever manage to fuck up their own product (Ardmore), have a really good product with low intensity that they only ever release at low abv (Tomintoul), or they over produce for blends so you can get steep discounts (Caol Ila).

a common benefit of cask strength is that you can play with dilution of your own and find the bliss point for your own palate.

when you get the official bottlings at lower strength you can only go down, so to speak. although Master Distillers allegedly dilute to roughly 20% abv when tasting.

quality of casks is a big benefit as well because when you have an official bottling it's a batch of so many different quality casks that the distillery is really only concerned about in a capacity that it keeps a certain standard.

and if you want anything out of the norm like Port/Madeira finish/maturation you will be less likely to find it from the distilleries own production as it adds cost that will most likely not be worth it to them in the long run as their profit margin per bottle is already extremely low as it is due the high taxes for distillation of alcohol before they even get to put it in a cask.

a negative is that cork is already liable to break/tot with low abv whisky and getting something in the high 50's-low 60's only increases that chance, but at least the additional strength means you dont ever really have to worry about the spirit oxidating anytime soon kept in the proper conditions.

Portwood 10 and NAS were the first signs of Glendronach falling and I've yet to really notice a clear benefit from the Revival(bottled 2021) over a 2019 bottling of the 12. If your are getting a Newer Revival do not overpay for it.

I'd suggest going for Glenallachie 10 Cask Strength(early batches if you want something less typically sherried, Batch 6 is distinctively red wine influenced)or 12. so far, their 15 has been pretty disappointing for the money, so much so I'd even suggest Arran 10 or Bunnahabhain 12 over it. It's really quite flat imho, generally sweet sure, but not something I'd give someone looking for taste.
