tell me about the saddest meal you've ever had. mine was 1/2 a raw eggplant and a cup of diced lactose-free swiss cheese (i'm not lactose intolerant).

That would be a frozen pan of my wife’s meatloaf.
Not that there was anything inherently wrong with it; it was fantastic meatloaf. But we had some extra ground beef she wanted to go ahead and use, so she doubled the recipe, and put the 2nd one in the freezer so it would be ready to just thaw and cook some evening.
Which I did, and it was delicious, but very sad for me. It was about two weeks after she died in a car accident.
But I would have felt worse if I simply let it go bad with age in the freezer.

Had a spaghetti Bolognese delivered from an Italian restaurant during lockdown. Was depressing to eat. Overcooked pasta ,and it was in a tupperware tub, so being super hot created lots of condensation which watered down an already boring bland sauce. Could barely stomach eating a quarter of it. After a good friend of mine died suddenly I went to a bar near me and ordered a hamburger. It was fine. But I started drinking, and at some point I was crying so openly in the bar that the bartender comped my last drink.
It rained as I walked home.

Shit sucked. Nice of them to comp that last drink. That was a shot of tequila in my friend's honor. He was always fond of tequila.

Saddest meal for me was Thanksgiving 1999. First holiday meal away from home, had to stay on campus because I was totally broke and my car was too shitty to drive 300 miles home. Everybody was gone, whole town pretty much shuts down. But there was a food donation box in the lobby of my dorm and it had everything I needed to make green bean casserole and some stove top stuffing so that became my festive holiday dinner.
