Will you use it regularly? If so, yes. If not, no. If you're a fisherman/hunter and want smoked fish and venison it's all but mandatory. If you plan on making a single brisket, screwing it up and then letting it collect dust then you get what you fucking deserve.

you can most of the smoking you want on a weber kettle with a slow n sear and two probe thermometer. but if you’re going to smoke a lot, get a smoker

I am going to try to make my own. I bought a PID controller on eBay and the cheapest electric burner I could find. I still haven't decided on the vessel, I've seen metal garbage cans, large Terra cotta pots, wood boxes. Once I saw that an electric smoker was literally a coil burner with a metal bowl on it in a large box, I thought I would try my hand at it.
