In some places of the world, the equivalent of $1 would take them a week or longer to earn.

think of it in terms of calories.

You're gonna go to the grocery, walk around, physical expending energy just so you can buy low calorie density foods?

Or you can just order a KFC without moving from your couch, getting calories in a much more energy-efficient manner

Because some people don’t have money.
They might just have a goat, and a wife for which they traded another goat they used to have.
If you only have one wife and are down to your last goat, you aren’t going to trade either of those things for a bucket of kfc.

In many places in the world, especially USA, agriculture is heavily subsidized. Meaning the state uses tax money to artificially lower the prices of raw food. Without those massive handouts, a farmer couldn't live from his work giving how much he can sell his crops in the current market.

There's also the pollution linked to agriculture, if farmers had to pay for the environnemental damage they make with pesticides, other chemicals, irrigation, etc... prices of food would have to be higher.

When you buy a 1$ burger, you don't pay the real price of the burger. You do it when you pay your taxs. The issue here is how you deresponsabilize farmers as they are not incited to focus on quality or reduce their environnemental impact.

If you had to pay your burger 20$, everything would actually improve: quality, health, farmer's life, etc... but it's impossible because the minute you stop subsidizing, the food industry will just import food from the countries who do.

But in all seriousness folks American warmongering and forcing people to buy petrol in dollars is what allows such a lavish lifestyle for even our poorest people. Even the homeless live like kings here and it's a direct result of us constantly waging proxy war and poking at other countries on a constant basis. So whenever a leftist tries the "but war is bad" angle remind them that war is the reason that it enjoys such a wonderful lavish lifestyle
