I have a trip to the USA (Chicago) in a few days. What restaurants should I try that aren't available in Canada?

So far I'm thinking Chick-Fil-A, and IHOP for the novelty. If either are a poor choice, by all beans, recommend something better. Cheers.

were you asking more about chain restaurants or chicago places that are good?

if chains, I'll recommend Culver's and Freddy's (Frozen Custard and Steakburgers). they're both smashburg places with frozen custard, but culver's is older and has a more wisconsin-specific sort of vibe, including their burgers being "butterburgers". since chicago is so close to WI it might be good -- culver's get worse the further away from WI you get.

make sure you get cheese curds if you go. their best entrees are probably butterburgers and fried fish, since WI has a long history of frying fish for lent.

truly cursed. I'm sorry, anon.

I checked, too, and apparently the name is just vestigial. it's basically just a nice quality smashburg at culver's.

but it's based on a regional burger which is about what you'd imagine based on the name: a diner-style burger with a huge dollop of butter on it as the only topping.

they tend to, it's a pretty common thing to do. giving someone a half eaten burger seems weird to me but something you haven't had your mouth all over is different, like something that's pre-portioned (pizza, appetizers, tendies, etc) or that you would only eat with utensils in the first place. the portions are big here because they pretty much expect you to take some home. there's no stigma around leftovers here.

Please don't give beggars your half-eaten bites. Save full food up in a doggy bag and when you hand it to them tell them its exactly this or exactly that. These dudes out there be crazy and sometimes picky so the last thing you want is a beggar to get uppity about you handing him half a slobbered burger. Or better fucking yet: Don't give food to homeless people to begin with. This is one of the largest cities in the nation with a comparative wealth of social services that they are all keenly aware of. Homeless people, ESPECIALLY in this city, know exactly where to get a hot meal, three times a day seven days a week, with plenty to take home. There are zero chronically-homeless people going hungry in this city.

Add to this that they are psychotic dogs, sex-abusers, violent criminals, murderers, and typically pawns of the local gang elements.

Yes, there are people who for one reason or another are out of a place to live who may have had fine-enough lives not long ago but are caught in unfortunate circumstances temporarily. These are not the people you will see taking handouts on the street, and there is a zero percent chance that your Au Cheval leftovers will end up in their mouths.
