>Chef Boyardee is an American brand of canned pasta products sold internationally by Conagra Brands. The company was founded by Italian immigrant Hector Boiardi
It was originally pronounced more like "boy-ardy" but a lot of people probably kept mispronouncing it so they just embraced it.

exactly like you would expect or get today?
this guy happened to make a good tomato sauce post-WWI and managed to commercialize it before WWII
then during WWII the USgov bought a shitload of rations from him, so the buisness expanded like you would expect
in the 50's-60's they packaged flour mix, cheese and sauce to sell to idiots and you got this shit
then inflation raped everything and everyone of everything you hold dear from the 70's on

and somewhere in there you get the original founder who sold his creation and life's work to the highest bidder who then sold to the next person who sold to the next person and now you have canned tomato sauce with sugar

back in the 70's my mother bought those but she would never buy mozzarella or pepperoni.

we either had it with the nasty parmesan that came with the package and ground beef or velveeta with ground beef. she said mozzarella was too expensive.

no matter what they were not good.

the chef boyardee za kits are good. the one with the little pepperonis is better than any frozen pizza you can get. didnt know they used to have whole cans of cheese in them. when I was growing up they had a little plastic packet of cheese and now they only come with sauce and the crust mix. if you cant make a chef boyardee pizza taste good, thats your fault. its literally just a dough recipe you probably would have done yourself and some sauce

Like cheap tomato based meat sauce with too much romano cheese. They attempted to hide the cheapness of the ingredients by drowning it in the pungent taste of ramano back then, and not in a good way. Peak Chef Boyardee was probably in the early 1980s, in my opinion. Their ravioli still had a decent amount of ground beef mixed into it, they upped the quality of the ingredients slightly, and so could dial back trying to mask the taste with cheese.

But pizza dough is just flour, oil, yeast and water and is much, much cheaper to make by volume than English Muffins are to buy. Cream cheese is also about 2$ per 8 oz package and I can get a 16 oz block of mozzarella for about 3$
I think you're mom's dumber than she is poor. When I was on a tight budget pizza was a big part of my rotation because it's cheap as shit to make.
It was usually
Pizza
Roasted potatoes with onions, sausage, and cheddar
Rice and Beans with canned tomatoes, onions, and garlic (add irregular bacon or pork sausage when possible)
Whole roasted chicken, whatever veg was cheapest that week, and a loaf of white bread (just yeast, flour, water)
Onion soup with sausage toasts
Roasted potatoes with irregular bacon, eggs, and canned green chilies
Kolaches
Chicken stir fry with white rice (add peanut butter and minced chilies, garlic to make it satay, ooh la la)
