It does seem 5dudes is on the decline, at least as far as sales go.
7ish years ago it seemed all their locations in my city were doing gangbuster sales. They were always packed, and the lines at lunchtime were insane.
Nowadays they have maybe 1/4 tables occupied when they’re “busy”, and there’s never a line at the counter. That was already the case when coof started, so it wasn’t a coof-result.
They’ve priced themselves out of being competitive with nearby alternatives.
For the same price of a burger at the closest 5guys, you can get something better at several local hipster burger joints, one of which even bakes their own buns and sources all their beef from a farm in a neighboring county.

Based and burgerpilled

I don't eat burgers often because I'm not personally a huge fan. But to me, there's a cheap burger that hits the spot while varying heavily in quality (BK, McD's) then there's burgers that are actually worth $8-10 for just the sandwich itself; they usually come from local joints.

Then there's shitters like 5 guys that serves a dry ass, burnt burger that is disgustingly greasy (despite the meat itself being brittle and dry) and it's $8 for the basic. Pass.

>> No.17598804

>>17598783
So I was born in 88 and I grew up in suburbia normieville usa with normal boomer suburbia parents and can speak on the applebees decline

Applebees used to be halfway decent, they used to cook the food, the staff got paid a little more than the average diner, and it wasn't crazy expensive

As far as decor, having that shit around really was normal to boomers and made it part of their charm or whatever. Most of them would have local schools HS sports teams or something. This is why it was a great business model, you could open another applebees and still give it local charm

Anyway, over the years the staff got worse, they started microwaving most of the food, and they didn't really make any changes to their menu or offer something no one else was. No "Try our 13 Chicken WIng Sauces" or no "Try this new burger that we advertise", I guess the sutis that were running it were just kind of nickle and diming the fuck out of the buiness (many such cases)

I do remember a few comfy times and eating some decent stuff, they had a good sampler platter for like 13$ with my soccer team when I was a kid but I went back there recently and it was awful, just white trash, shit food, shit service, and the whole "charm" decor stuff really didn't age well.

RIP Applebees

They all suck these days, making a burger at home from scratch with quality ingredients will beat just about anything you can get elsewhere.
But in the past there was some cafe that shut down years ago that had an amazing stuffed mushroom and swiss burger. Longhorn steakhouse had the most amazing bbq burger I have ever tasted, the bacon was super thick and crunchy but with a ton of smokey flavor and the bbq sauce was rich and had just the right balance of sweet and savory.
Fuddruckers 20 years ago made a damn good burger and was the only non traditional sit down restaurant that would let you order your burger medium rare. I miss their condiment bar and endless cheese fountain. Went back a few years ago and it was a ghost town. I was there on a prime dinner time and there were like 5 customers in the whole place when it used to be packed from open to close. The condiment bar was sad half empty with old one day away from expired veggies. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of fast food and franchised restaurant chains announced location closures or huge consolidations of their menus within the next 2-5 years. Rising food, production, and delivery costs on top of supply issues and shortages can't be helping them with keeping prices low. And if more places start to increase hourly wages to bring in workers, you know that the restaurant is going to pass the cost to the consumer by increasing menu prices to balance out higher wages without dipping into the company's profits.

At some point, the average consumer will realize that the mediocre meal made with low quality ingredients isn't worth the cost even for the convenience. Dollar menus are gone. "Value" menus seem to be hit or miss when it comes to the quality/quantity vs cost. I'm noticing a decrease in places advertising $5 lunch specials, and those who have them, seem to be decreasing the amount of food you get. Or at least that is how it appears.

With that being said, I'm surprised that places like O'Charley's, Chili's, TGIF, and Ruby Tuesdays are still open. I honestly don't remember the last time I was in any of these places. From what I remember, they were all pretty much the same when it came to menu selections and quality - which wasn't great.

I also don't understand how Olive Garden is still around.

Olive Garden is for the white trash or low class blue collar people like my step mom, stereotypical burger Europeans think of. Most americans are not like this but there are definitely some. My step mom is one of these people, its unironically her favorite restaurant, she is a terrible cook, anything she does cook is super trashy and basic like tuna salad or instant mashed potatoes, so I wasn't surprised. They live in one of these areas and we had to go there for her birthday and the Olive Garden was packed with an hour 15 minute wait. I was blown away

On the other side of my family, they're Sicilian, and theyre like that scene in goodfellas or the godfather when they cook italian food. Stir the sauce, no canned anything, etc, etc. We like going to their side more as far as food is concerned.

I am so glad I was born in a sicilian family. I was called pretentious by friends because I think everything at Olive Garden sucks ass with the exception of their breadsticks. I like those. Their minestrone is passable too, but it's hard to fuck that up.

Their pasta dishes are an abomination though. The alfredo is disgustingly thick, their marinara tastes like ketchup with italian seasonings.. it's just not good. And the fact that it's like $20 per person baffles me. Italian food is cheap as shit, I could spend $20 and make better quality at home that would be enough to feed my whole family.

Fun fact: it’s apparently their policy to not have everything ready for online/call-in orders when you get there.
A couple years back, me and a few coworkers did a group order. Like 6 burgers in total and like 4 orders of fries.
The person who went to pick it up had to wait like 20min or so at the place, and basically asked what the point of ordering ahead was.
He was told that even if you call in or order online, they don’t drop the fries until you actually get there “so they will be as fresh as possible”. And apparently a few others were there ahead of him picking up orders, so of course their fries had to be cooked before ours.

It would cost well over 15€ per person (~9€ burger, ~5€ fries, ~6€ milkshake) and at those price I can just as well walk into any mid level restaurant and get more than burger and fries from chain restaurant.

this is bullshit. what you have picture perfect memory of how something tasted ten years ago? i've worked there for 7 years and their bread recipe and vegetables are literally still the same as when they opened in 1983. bread is baked fresh with no preservatives. all produce is sliced fresh daily. subway does none of these things.

the real problem is what you're talking about is bread. it's the most volatile thing in the food industry since it's negatively affected by the environment it's prepared in. while it's not intentional that it should taste any different from day to day there are times when you literally can't do anything about it. if the humidity is low it dries the dough out and creates a chewy crust on the outside. you can tell if the dough expired in the retarder if there's white clouds or striations in the baked bread. when humidity is high it starts proofing in the retarder, and proofs too quickly in the proofer. overproofed bread usually falls, is full of bubbles, and looks not only unnaturally large with bulges in it but usually also flattens out.

there was a couple of weeks in history they tried to change their french bread recipe. the reception was so awful they flip flopped it immediately. it tasted like biscuits.

so the real point i've gathered from experience is that JJ's lacks curbside appeal. locations don't need a lot of square footage to operate so a lot of them are jammed into tiny strips or into the bases of buildings where it's hard to realize if they're really there. another issue is they didn't really start terrestrial advertising until relatively recently in their history. they traditionally advertised with sampled food by pounding pavement and giving away quarters of sammiches for free. we attract business of people who do not even know what we do. most of my employees admit they never knew what JJs was until they started working there.

the other thing they lack is major return business appeal. a lot of customers admit to me they think of our food as a "healthier option than [X restaurant]." the popular mindset of eating out doesn't seem to be to get something healthy, you want something fattening to gorge on that fills you up. the restaurant industry has trained people to think this way and that's why americans are so fucking obese, and why JJs doesn't get a lot of walk-in business compared to a Wendy's or Five Guys or Chipotle.

final major issue is just failing to meet the customer's imaginary demand. they think we are biting subway, when we are not. we don't even consider them our competition. so JJ's does not have toaster ovens, multiple types of cheese, or the same veggie toppings as subway, because we're not them.

CEO emails tell us that profits are actually increasing market-wide thanks to introduction of a rewards program and cycling LTOs, but i think they're selling out the brand by doing this. it's a way different company now under Inspire Brands.

tl;dr JJs failed to market their mission to the mass populace and doesn't offer what ppl actually want them to have and thus aren't ever going to be a popular company.

>> No.17612386

I thought their whole selling point was speed and delivery. I don't want them to have 50 different toppings and cheeses and sauces to complicate things. I go to jimmy johns when I've had a hard days work and I just want to get something I know will be of at least middling quality in me as fast as humanly possible so I can go home and pass out. A lot of places you gamble if your meal is going to be any good or not because of varied ingredient freshness and cooking times. At JJ I know exactly how my food will taste every time and it's always just as good never better never worse. I like that consistency.

>> No.17612399

wouldn't be surprised if the major chains like mcd's start the hard cope first and would be the first to figure out full automation of food preparation. imagine there's maybe one technician in there running the machines but otherwise all food becomes mass-produced slop produced by lifeless machines. the dreaded interaction with snotty teenage humans and not knowing what mood they're going to be in or how well they're going make food is removed as an element entirely, and instead replaced with the fear and uncertainty that anything is going to be correctly cooked at all, or if what the restaurant is doing is even ethical. imagine a bag of questionable quality junk is slid out to you.

i hope this does happen so that the practice of eating fast food finally becomes globally mocked as being symbolic of poverty and gets seen as trashy and morally laughable. people should know how to feed themselves.

all of that is exactly right, and consistency is the most major thing to protect. i consider it more important than quality or speed.

the issues i was trying to highlight were all the major things that prevent business from being attracted or returning. one difficult visit means they're never coming back, and first impressions are extremely important.

they attempted to curate menu stagnation by overloading it to the point of being so complicated people can't navigate it without asking me loads of the same questions.

nobody knows that the french is the default anymore. they think they have to choose it. you can walk up to me and just say a number, list some mods, ask for sides like a drink, and i'll ring you out fast as fuck.

now i have to answer countless questions from noobs while you wait behind them in line. like what our bread sizes are, what kind of peppers we have, what the difference between the different halves of the menu are, what the difference between the original #1 and slim #1 are because they fucked the menu up so bad. visually what actually is the difference between the #1 and slim #1 anymore? nothing by the menu's standards because it doesn't fucking tell you. they moved the "lettuce tomato & mayo" out of the ingredients lists up to the top left and put it in the tiniest font and NOBODY.

FUCKING.

READS IT.

It depends on their policies. The problem is, when a restaraunt gets big enough, it becomes much more effective to cut costs and save money that way, than to maintain quality while trying to expand. If Chipotle decides to start reducing the quality of their ingredients to make a quick buck, it can very easily go downhill. The secret for McD's is that they found a way to do this while still selling their garbage food.

Every one of the ones where I live is charging for queso and guac, citing one of the usual excuses "COVID", which isn't an issue any more "supply issues" also not an issue, and "inflation" which is fucking horseshit, adjust your prices elsewhere and remain competitive or I'm going to your competitor across the street.

I went in for a standard smothered burrito and they refused to make one for the price they usually asked ~10 USD. I forced them to build it and the manager charged 16 USD for it, which I would have left for if my brother wasn't already eating and having paid for his burrito. Fucking cunts. However, a couple years ago I started a new job near to a Moe's so I figured "fuck it" and went there. I found it was /way/ fuckin better than I remembered. Like, they made some serious changes. The rice didn't taste like plastic anymore. The melted cheese had texture, meaning they actually melted cheese instead of having cheese-goo. But the best thing was the steak was delicious; tender like rib roast, pink in the center, with a zesty Chipotle coating. Haven't been to a Moe's since I left that job. No clue if Moe's has gotten better or if that was just one standout location. But I think they've improved, of I had to guess.
