although the most common complaint for the rok grinder is the burrs. some say they rub some say they dont get fine enough, probably best to get it and use it for a while to see if you have good luck and got good burrs and be ready to buy other burrs to replace them with.
hoffmeme did a video on it a few years ago.

i have been thinking about buying one but i think ill wait a bit longer. the problem is that it seems that you buy this and replace the burrs or spend $1k+, i wish there was another manual grinder like the rok in between these 2 price points, that didnt require addition tweaking.

just been told I have to quit drinking milk and found that whilst black tea isn't great, black coffee is actually breddy gud. Looking to expand my tastes a bit, are these a meme or worth it? I timed myself grinding 35gs of beans and it took just under a minute. Would have taken double that amount of time with my old grinder. I enjoy manual grinding as part of my morning ritual. By the time I grind my beans and fold my filter my water is up to temp.

i will be interested to buy a much cheaper ($20-250g) bag of panama to see if panama in general tastes great or if its just this single geisha varietal.

Guatemalan has been my most disappointing by far, but again you can have so many different varietals from a single country or even a single region in a single country so probably not best to write off a whole region based off of one experience.

Why can't you dorks just admit it, they do offer some good options and it's far more convenient than doing it yourself (or going to some independent cafe and watching some burnout stoner with gross facial hair take 30 minutes to hand you a pour over).

Personally, I think Starbucks Blonde Roast drip is fantastic (only avail in the early a.m. or via pour over). And I think their blonde espresso drinks are also fantastic. And on a hot day, the espresso frappuccino isn't half bad. And they always call my dog cute and offer him a pup cup (although I usually turn it down).

For someone mildly interested in coffee, is there a sticky/reference for all this stuff. The coffee world seems pretty broad, do I just keep looking until I find the roast I like? Any way to narrow it down so I'm not spending a lot of money to find what I DO like?

i guess you have to ask yourself if you like coffee or if you like caffeine. and if you like coffee ask yourself if you just like drinking it or you like making it (or even the idea of making it/ interested in the brewing process)

also do you like espresso or not.
i would say if you mostly drink espresso and want to brew espresso at home its going to be much more expensive and difficult to get started compared to other brewing methods.
my mum had a cheap moka pot laying around she didnt use anymore so i decided to try it out, and i really loved the mechanical process of the whole thing. but i hated the beans she had laying around and what was available at the local grocery store so i did some research and high rated "local" roasters, found one that looked good and then looked at the range they had that was made for stove top (moka pot(i would recommend starting with preground as a beginner because a cheap(less than $200) grinder will give a bad first impression and might sour your outlook)
and then ordered 2 bags (250g each, buy small quantities) 1 was a ethiopian and brazilian and the other was colombian. this was great because i realised i hate dark roasted coffee and i could focus my time and money into exploring light roasts.

i think its good to do a "world tour" of coffee as a beginner to really understand what you like and dont like and then you can. im sorry man i really want to finish what im saying but im afraid im having a schizo moment and i cant feel the ground, i feel as if im in 0 gravity. i hope i can finish this later or that i meade sense at all im sure im going to be made fun of by the other fags in this thread, o hope someone more mentally sane cane help you.

Any recommendations for a new coffee machine? Just a casual drinker that wants a decent machine, willing to invest a bit but don't want anything high end and overly expensive either since I don't have money to burn.

Previously used a Delonghi Magnifica, would like something similar but a tad above in quality.

Good question, I'm not aware of any common reference.
Ultimately it's like finding out which alcohol you like and how.
That includes brewing method, roast, origin, blend etc.
In turn I doubt you'll get around experimenting quite a bit.
I'd say first is whether you prefer your coffee black or with something added.
Next is the kind of brew method, in that case things like price and convenience might be important.
Exclude the ones that are a no go for non taste reasons and then you could just visit different coffee shops and try the same coffee done in different ways.
That way you can eliminate the ones you like the least.
I think then it might be worthwhile to check whether a light or dark roast is better, followed by a trip through the different coffee origins
One could make the argument to revisit every station with the preferences you have learned because it can make a difference.

Honestly the best part of coffee isn't even the coffee itself, but the catastrophic bowel evacuation that follows. Seriously, coffee has done wonders to help me expel the mistakes I consumed the previous night and I always feel like a million bucks afterward... minus the slight headache from dehydration, but you get the idea.

>nobody explained what yirgacheff is to me so I bought some
Small region, good soil. If you want to set your sights on even smaller targets you can look for beans from specific washing stations. I have some from here.
>Gedeb Worka coffee comes from the Worka Sakaro washing station in the Gedeb district in the south of the Yirgacheffe coffee region. Gedeb is one of the districts, also called woredas, of the Gedeo zone, with the Kochere woreda to the west, Yirgacheffe woreda to the northwest, Bule woreda to the north, and the Oromia region to the south and east.
>What will I think of it?
Its a crap shoot really, but if it lines up with your tastes you're in luck. Nearly all of ethiopian coffee is "landrace". They don't really grow specific varietals, they just take care of the shit that natually grows and everyone from the area will use the same processing plant. As more knowledge gets to the small farmholders, the quality is slowly rising year over year.

A big thing with the small ethiopian coop washing stations is they're now investing money into sample roasters and good grinders. Turns out knowing and experiencing the value of your greens is a great fucking negotiating tool. This is how "trickle down" actually works.
