It's not a "trick" it's an expected customer behavior. The fast food restaurant saves on having to pay an employee to clean up after guests, and guests in turn get cheaper food. It's one of the points of fast food, and one of the things that distinguished fast food restaurants from normal restaurants when fast food first became a thing.

One time when I was going through a manic phase, I went to a mickey d's with friends one evening. There was this chick that was low energy, insecure and defeated about life and throughout the evening I'd try to give her more confidence or belief/drive to seize life by the balls.
Anyways as we were queuing up she mentioned that she could use a little tray to serve her coffee etc since she just moved in this small student studio room (it was in Paris).
Anyways I give her this whole speech as we move up the line about how you need to believe that life will provide for you if you really mean it, if you really want it, you can make it happen, and I tell her ''just ask for a tray dude''. We were ordering to go, so it was different than just grabbing and ''stealing one'' after eating on premises. It was actually honestly asking and receiving it from someone working there.
Anyways she gets to order and I just tell her ''just ask'' etc trying to brew up some courage in her. Well she asked, and guess what the cashier working our order just slipped a tray into our carry-out bag, and we walked back to her place and ate there, and she was real fucking happy about having a tray now.

It was one of those nights where I felt like I did something for somebody on a spiritual level. The look on everyone's faces when it worked, and my theory was vindicated. Our group had a lot of low energy, self-defeating students in it, but I always had belief you can master certain circumstances if you will it hard enough.
