Right now ive got this ancient range from the 50s. the oven coil is broken and the landlord isnt fixing it (says wait until the summer lol), and it takes about a good 15 minutes before any pan placed on the coil is usably hot. also it gives off this weird charring/smoking smell even though it isnt dirty.
Im wondering if there are any other alternatives

So get a good electric "stove." I recommend just about anything by Cadco. Shop around because I found the following for under $200. But realistically nothing beats fire.

Gas is much more expensive. The downside of cheap induction cooktops is they don't have much control (either really low or really high), but they boil water much faster than gas, and those portable butane canisters are expensive as fuck to use long-term.

i would look into your options for induction or electric.
propane/white gas/etc burning inside the house is not the best idea.
just buy induction.
you can use stainless steel, carbon steel, and cast iron on it.
one of or even all 3 of the above are all you should be using anyway.

if you don't treat them like shit you should get decades out of camp stoves. its just a terrible idea to fire up a portable gas burner inside a building.
a typical gas range is attached to an oven or a countertop, theres zero risk of the flame getting where it doesn't belong unless you're dumb enough to put something into it.

Coleman stoves are built to have non-stick shitpans on them where the ones in the asian store are meant for heavy woks. I'd recommend something like the iwatani 35fw
the cheap ones only go up to 2kw

the fuel isn't that expensive, i get around an hour out of €1.30 cans at 3.5kw (full power)
so it'll last much longer with a low flame

a can lasts around a week, depending on how much I cook
€5 a month on fuel doesn't seem unreasonable to me

OP I've one of those for camping. I run it on little butane cans. It fucking sucks and takes 15 minutes to boil a couple of pints of water, but is sufficient for a few basic meals. They are extremely lightweight and flimsy which again helps for camping. I've also a thing like pic related which I use for outdoor wok cooking and large catering, like 20 gallons of sauce. I use large propane cylinders. I've ran it in the house too on blocks and a cement slab with the backdoor open. Kicks ass but propane is a lot more expensive than mains gas so it is only when I need it.
