To clear things up:
Leon Bel, future creator of the Laughing Cow cheese, was mobilized in 1914 and assigned to a logistics regiment (in French Régiment du train, the word having nothing to do with the rail vehicle), more precisely in a RVF (fresh meat supply) section, using ancestors of our modern refrigerated trucks.

Such units being relatively recent they didn't have emblems and whatnot and the commandant of Bel's unit wrote to Benjamin Rabier, a famous illustrator, to draw something for them.
Some soldier then got the idea of the pun "Wachkyrie", sounding like "Vache qui rit" (Laughing Cow in French) and at the same time referencing the Valkyries.

After the war, Leon Bel created its brand and reused the name and emblem (further modified by Rabier).

This. Digital noise is generated by a process mostly known in audio world as rotational velocidensity, but lately even image enthusiasts have become aware of it.

Rotational velocidensity affects all image files encoded with lossy compression. These include jpg, gif, and tiff.
There seems to be a lot of misconceptions in the image community regarding the differences between 4bpp JPG and PNG format. It is true that 4bpp is technically as good as PNG, but there are other reasons to get pictures in a lossless format.

Seeing the difference now isn’t the reason to encode to PNG. PNG uses lossless compression, while JPG is ‘lossy’. What this means is that for each year the JPG sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 0.2bpp assuming you have SATA – it’s about 0.3bpp on IDE, but only 0.05bpp on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don’t want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting JPEGs in about 2001, and if I try to watch any of the pics I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 4bpp, they just look like crap. The detail is terrible, the ringing artifacts…well don’t get me started. Some of those picture albums have degraded down to 1 or even 0.5bpp. PNGs from the same period still look great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to PNG, you may not be able to see the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.
