this has actually been an issue seeing as there is a corporate binding contract made by the original ceo that states that they cant raise there prices
so originally they just changed the hotdog to make it cheaper which sucks cause the og one was the best in the game
but some places have tried to just out right remove it
which i believe may take place store wide if they dont change whatever legal mumbo jumbo that makes it so they cant raise prices

Everyone in America knows what “The Costco hotdog” is, and they know it because of the price, not the item itself.
It’s literally the textbook example of an effective loss leader.

In America, our beggars aren’t begging for food, or begging for money for food.
They’re begging for money for alcohol and/or drugs.
And nobody actually “starves” here. Hell, our poor people are the fattest demographic.
When you see stats of “people going hungry” in America, keep in mind those stats are compiled by non-profit agencies who want donations to “feed hungry Americans”.
Non-profit doesn’t mean “doesn’t make money”. If you own/manage one you can be rolling in cash.

Yes, for the hundredth time. You can literally go out and look at the prices of the products out in the store (which are still cheaper even with the markup). The "loss leader" myth is only true in a few markets. Costco slashes their costs massively by buying out entire supply chains back to the fucking livestock. Same deal with the rotisserie chickens: they are paying pennies for the things.

You used to be able to buy it without a costco membership, it was always 'required' but they didn't ask for it at locations where the food court is outdoors.
Of course, they started asking for it right when covid started, which is incidentally when they removed combo pizza and made the chicken bake more expensive.
Costco is compromised, expect the hot dog combo to be $3.50 soon.

This. "Non-profit" isn't the same as "no profits" and most non-profits do. Being a non-profit only means that you can't funnel profits to shareholders/private individuals. Bear in mind that the salaries of your executives and operators are merely "administrative costs" and you can pay them whatever you want; you just can't offer them dividends or bonuses.

I don't know what a pack of dogs costs at Costco, but I know that a 14-pack of dogs at Fred Meyer is like $6 and an 8-pack of buns is $1.49 meaning that each dog+bun works out to about $0.62. Condiments are basically nothing, but let's assume the average person puts $0.20 worth of ketchup, mustard, relish and onions on each dog they buy. So altogether Costco could be selling a hot dog that costs them $0.85 in materials for $1.50. But the kicker is that retailers don't pay retail price for their own merchandise when they prepare it for you; they're paying wholesale. The markup for most grocery stores is about 10-15% so that hot dog is only really costing them $0.75 in ingredients. They are still making money with each sold hotdog, just not as much because they are losing out on the markup.

It won't go up, because
A: It's wired into the company charter documents and contracts
B: It's not strictly for profit and never has been. It's advertising. Getting members in to have a hotdog and drink means you spend money on everything else. All the money you spend in store greatly offsets the money the spent on purchasing hot dog ingredients and soda syrup. It's probably some of the best marketing in American retail.

Here, assuming that Costco was buying from webstaurantstore (which they aren't) it costs them about $0.35 per 20oz soda. People who say they are starving are literal retards. I was destitute and near homeless at one point and for $55CAD I got a 3kg pork shoulder joint, two rotisserie chickens, a bunch of carrots, onions and sweet potatoes and some herbs and spices for a dollar each from dollarama. I roasted the vegetables and slow cooked the chicken and pork with a herb and spice rub. In the end I had 28 meals, enough for 2 weeks of food, lunch and dinner. That's not including the load of soup I made from the chicken carcass, carrot and onion ends.
