Can somebody explain why nearly every fast food chain decided to do this?
Not saying remodels can't be good, but why did they all decide to go for this ugly block look?
In my town there's one Burger that's remained unchanged and it's basically the only one I go to. I just prefer to go to any older looking restaurant if I come across one.

Now the target market is the parents.

Same reason why all the ads have adults now: they're changing the target demographic. I do think that this is a weird business choice though. I figured that kids would always be the money makers, although maybe they don't need to advertise as much to get their brand loyalty.

The top design makes people feel shame when they go to McDonald's, they feel like clowns going to the fatass circus. The bottom design looks sleek and sophisticated so they can feel like a big boy as they slurp down their slop.

Why? Adults have money; kids don't. Sure parents do, but not all adults are parents.

You're close. The correct answer is not just one answer but multiple pieces of a pie chart. This thread has been on here before but the answers remain the same
1) Lots of these companies are owned by 1 mega company and with a building that looks like the bottom pic they can repurpose it. So it has a Mcdonalds logo on it now but they could easily convert that to a Chipotle.
2) Everything is soulless and awful now
3) Parents just give their kid's iPads and don't force them to go play in play escapes anymore, additionally lots of these suits like to cut costs and no one wants to pay someone to clean a ball pit room in addition to all the other shit McDs does
4) Opens them up to more lawsuits
5) Everyone needs a makeover every so often. When I worked at a grocery store we had the same wine display up for 3 years. We literally just moved it to another area of the store and the wine started selling like hotcakes. It's incredible how a small simple change has an effect on NPC's programming.

Because kids can pester their parents for McDonalds. On top of that, brand loyalty you build as a kid stays with you for life, which is why there are so many Disney adults. Actually, that's probably why their switching focus to the adult consumer.

That makes families the sole target market though. People without families probably have way more disposable income to spend on shit like fast food.

Ironically, part of the official explanation is that the modern designs are actually less blocky in design than their predecessors. Over the years, the company had a lot of problems with their classic store designs being difficult to renovate or redesign. When prime McDonalds locations were found to last decades, they started to find a lot of problems as the stores couldn't be upgraded to match increased demand.

You post this thread at least once a week. How autistic can you be that a single change in store design over 30 years triggers a prolonged internet meltdown

>> No.17501254

The marketing shift away from kids has a few drivers, with fast food one of the big ones was backlash mcdonalds got from how they targeted kids in the 80s and 90s with snap together toys, we all remember asking if we could go back to get one of the other ones because they fit together and getting a shrieking "NO AND IF YOU ASK AGAIN IT'S GOING IN THE TRASH!" (maybe that was just my experience), and other things like the playplace stores and birthday party rooms. You had years of media saying how advertising to kids was literally the holocaust and any parents who let their kid near a mcdonalds was tragically irresponsible, comparing the food to hard drugs and so on, and then Supersize Me came out which threw a tremendous wet blanket over any kind of "fun" fast food branding at all, note the other two removed "King" and "Biggie" sizes also. Further pushing this trend was the emergence of the "fast-casual" resteraunt class, like Chipotle and Five Guys, both of which use much flatter and simpler branding, Chipotle's brand aesthetics in particular are a major origin point for the grey slate, faux-upmarket style we've seen the older chains adapt.

Mcdonald's advertising in general is kind of fascinating in how restrained and carefully broad appeal it is, like it'll just be black people dancing in front of a red background then the jingle or catchphrase, Wendys and Burger King take much more risk and have much more specificity in their ads, maybe that's always a function of trying to keep up with a dominant leader

Unless the mayor takes pains to restore/upkeep easily weathered stone and re-work plumbing/electricity across the city, it's absolutely too much to constantly keep up. Shit breaks, all the time and the roof is the hardest part. I'm a landlord for a 200 year old building, it's frustrating.

They're going to get business anyway, but they also want to spend less despite being fully able to spend more. This is what happens when you replace worshiping God with worshiping mammon. Notice how almost all of the great aesthetic works of the west were created by and during times of great religious belief. Religious people want to create works of beauty to praise their creator. Modern man has thrown away the idea of creation for creations sake and only seeks to fatten his wallet. It's a race to the bottom, all things streamlined until there will be one type of everything and everyone will be interchangeable because that is the most profitable way to make more money.

It's a soul sickness, things won't get better until there is a reset of consciousness. It won't happen in our lifetimes I fear. But somewhere down the line maybe our children or grandchildren will see a brighter future.

Completely forgot to mention, but while I can't answer for the rest of the world, I know that McDonald's Canada wants to be seen as a "legitimate" restaurant franchise instead of a place for kids. When I worked there, we actually had a weird waitress system where cashiers were expected to deliver to the customer's table (we had to call them guests to make them feel welcome) if they requested it.

The other is that it makes the buildings easier to sell. There are times when a fast food place has shut down and then the owners of the building can't sell it to anyone else because of the crazy design, or they have to spend a fuck ton to renovate it back int oa regular building again.
