I hate this "healthy food is expensive" meme.

A head of cabbage is like two bucks and lasts for several meals... in fact most vegetables are very affordable. Potatoes, beans and rice are cheap as shit. For proteins you can eat eggs or sardines if you're strapped for cash. Even supposedly expensive healthy food like avocados aren't really that expensive if you factor in satiety and nutritional value.

You know what's expensive? Being a lazy bitch and expecting everything to be premade. Simple but tasty dishes can be made in like 20 minutes. Just buy whole, fresh ingredients and you can eat healthy food that tastes great and is cheaper than any of the processed garbage your obese consoomer friends are eating.

I grow potatoes and potato scab and blight basically makes home gaming, especially from your own seed stock year on year unsustainable. Here is how it works ...

>fresh soil that has not seen a potato in years
>currently disease free
>buy in certified disease free seed potatoes
>grow potatoes
>eventually plants become diseased
>ground is now diseased
>stop growing potatoes for a few years

How do large agricultural producers do it? With lots and lots of chemicals according to a schedule published by a chemical manufacturer. You can't even buy the shit for home use.

What happens if you don't use certified disease free seed potatoes? Well they are pretty much confirmed to be diseased so you'll just get diseased plants from the get go. They come from plants which have been maintained with regular chemical treatments.

Where do disease free seed potatoes come from? Remote farms setup to grow seed potatoes in relative isolation from all other plants and sources of disease. Is it possible to have such a setup at home? Yes, in theory, in reality your neighbours, the local plants, local animals, traffic, visitors etc are all potential sources of disease.

I do plant potatoes still when the motivation strikes, but I use disease free seed potatoes, containers and fresh compost. I plant them in open ground too every now and then, but they are always at least scabby, even scab resistant varieties. I don't fuck too much with potatoes though because I grow a few hundred lbs of peppers and tomatoes each year which are far more valuable and not worth the infection risk.

Don't grow them so close together. If one shows signs of blight, harvest it early.

>> No.17494660

You mong I literally describe planting them in containers.

>>17493956
I kind of have to plant them densely. I don't have enough space to space them out to make them worth growing. Getting 5-10 potatoes per plant is OK when 4 rows of 10 plants, but not OK when 4 rows of 5 in the same space.

I've found blight to just blow in, I do find it quite easy to control though, usually I cut back affected plants and baby them through the season, it only gets bad when I plant a lot of susceptible plants and varieties and I can't keep control of it on the land. I mainly suffer from potato scab to be honest which is almost impossible to get rid of without letting the ground rest because you dig it all in as part of the preparations each year.

I checked on their site before making that post so yes I really think that. Did you not go to their site before making this post? Also, the highest number on that chart is $1.42/LB which would put 3LBs of apples at $4.26 which is still less than the fruit cup and directly in line with some of the stuff on Walmart's website.

First off the fries are closer to 2-3 dollars, and the fruit is closer to 4-5 dollars. Second off those aren't regional fruits for virtually anywhere in the US or Europe. Make a citrus and berry plate and by calories, in the US or EU, and it's gonna be much cheaper per calorie and by size of the meal than potatoes.

true on all counts
i'm fat (although i've dropped significantly over the past year) and am autistic so i take much longer then most when cooking. That said fast food will never taste as good as a properly constructed home meal.
I have a bacon, bean and onion stew which i serve alongside cheese (not pre-shredded because i can't go back to that stuff anymore) on toasted flat bread. Lots of nutrients, especially fiber, so i feel full for the entire day.

The problem is a lack of knowledge on nutrition and exercise, not so much fast food. There are people who can eat fast food for every meal and maintain a healthy weight. If you eat garbage everyday and don't bother with simple exercise then yeah, you're body is going to be a disaster.
