The thudding of tomatoes against the door at my back continue growing louder. I can't hold it for long The sweat on my palms makes it hard to hold them in place. My wife's familiar face appears in the hall, and I loose an expression of relief; half sigh, half moan.
"You got them both? Where's the Zippo?"
She lifts the jug of ethanol and pats a pocket.
"Your lighter was in the shoebox, right where you said."
Our eyes widen when an unearthly squeal erupts from behind me. It's like nothing I've ever heard, but it sure sounds angry. Thankfully, it's slightly muffled - as if gurgling through water or oil.
I spread my feet a bit further apart and tell her to dump the ethanol over the floor and the sides of the hall. She does so, then backs up while pinching her nose shut. I wish I could do the same, but I'm afraid to move a hand from the door. She tests the lighter and snaps it shut - good, still some fuel in there. I motion for her to bring it to me, while instructing her.
"All right, honey, listen: when I count to five, I'm going to drop the lit Zippo into the puddle at my feet, and then I'm going to sprint out through the garage with you. Got it? Then we're both going out, down the driveway."
She nods, though her eyes focus a bit too long at my feet. I glance down to see a piece of lettuce sliding through the gap beneath the door, though it recoils when it touches the liquid ethanol. We're running out of time. I never thought I'd be happy to have only one route to my kitchen. She dashes toward the garage, but keeps watching me from around the corner, quivering in fear.
I do the count, drop the lighter, and push away from the door as hard as I can. I feel the flames erupt behind me as I hear the door flying open and striking the wall. I stop at the garage entry to glance behind me, watching the enormous mass of salad writhing in flames, cucumbers flailing. I wonder for the hundredth time - how can this be? What could have

Bruh. White vinegar and rice vinegar are extremely different. Rice vinegar is pleasantly sweet.
