Is there anything I can add or do to my bean soup to reduce the amount it makes me fart? I used that 16 bean soup mix with mirepoix and a ham bone with lots of meat still attached and I'm literally farting every few minutes.

>> No.17391570

Eat beans more often and you wont fart as much, anyway farting is your gut bacteria being fed, its a good thing.

Here's my soup. It's excellent but this gas is just too much..

The Bean Institute advises the hot soak method for your beans, to reduce gas causing compounds - basically get your beans soaking in a large amount of water, heat to a boil, for 2 to 3 minutes, then take off heat & let cool for at least 4 hours. Drain water, rinse, then cook.

Have some beano before you eat. Senate beans is one of my families favorite meals and that's what my mom would do. It never bothered me as much.

Also use navy beans next time. Trust me, it's the best thing to do in that recipe. And unless you wanted it to be thin and brothy I'd use a bit less water. The fat melts off and helps to cook the beans giving a thicker consistency like pic related. Very tasty meal though.

The gases come from some sugars in them not being able to be digested by your body's enzymes so they reach the lower end of the colon and there get broken down by bacteria with gases as a result.
They are last remainders of the once potent arsenal of substances legumes had to avoid getting eaten, which we consequently removed by selection.
So yeah, you are feeding some of your intestinal flora that can work with these molecules, whether that is that good is a matter of view, there are many other bacteria in your flora, of the the now gas-producing ones dies out those would take their place. Which would mean no more gas but you don't know what other useful fuctions these bacteria do for you and what consequences their disappearance would have.
