I'm sure we've all seen the large price hikes. Inflation is here and it's not going to get better any time soon; in fact, it's going to get worse. I was fortunate enough to find some cheap pork today while shopping, but it's of the lean chop verity (pic related) that I'm not used to cooking. How does one make good use of these? Braise? Bread and fry?

If anyone else is looking to make cheap meat palatable, use this thread for questions and recommendations.

>Bread and fry?
Yes, after pounding it with a mallet.

Invest in chest freezer and buy in bulk from local rancher.

Cook it to medium rare and make a nice pan sauce with butter, white wine or lemon and fennel bulb or something.

$4/lb for a bone-in pork shoulder. $4/lb for fucking chicken thighs, $3 for bone-in. Took a look at the USDA report and supposedly chicken should be somewhat cheaper this week in most markets, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is probably your best option. Also could slice it thin so it cooks fast for a stir fry kind of meal. Could grind it if you have the equipment, or use a cleaver and chop-grind if you don't. Lean ground pork is surprisingly versatile.

Is 1.89 USD a pound for chicken considered cheap? Got just under two pounds of chicken drumsticks for a little over three dollars.

Honestly, harvesting it from the wild is where I am at. Thankfully, I have been hunting most of my life, so we can bag a deer or two each year and save a ton of cash. But you can always bag some fish on a weekend off the dock or shore and take those home for a good old fry up or bake, fish tacos, whatever.

The price hikes haven't seemed that ridiculous. But I live in one of the rare places in America that manages to have a lot of black people and a lot of supermarkets so there's very little gouging but you can buy a box of half eaten poptarts.

You must be the best fisherman around if you can always do this.

Chuck out a long line. You'll get something. I know he was talking about shore fishing but I go out with my buddy a bit on his boat and we chuck one out as insurance. Get an old electric fence reel and chuck a big line on that, sinker on the end, buoy on the other, whole shit load of baited hooks. Legal to have up to 25 hooks where I live. Go fishing, then come back and pull it in at the end. Even if you caught fuck all up till that point, usually 10+ fish on it. Just make sure you can find the thing again. You can take one out from shore as well with a kontiki or a drone or a kayak or whatever

Ironically, yes. I live in Colorado, but we consistently bag daily limits for trout within a few hours. They are not hard to catch even on shitty Walmart equipment. We usually just use 2 lb mono with clear bobbers and a swivel with a tri tip hook and power bait (purists with worms and lures can get fucked, lol).

When we have gone to places like Sanibel and South Padre Island for fishing, we usually get good success using similar setups, but on S. Padre there's some fishing charters that are around 20 USD during the off-season that will take you out a bit and you will catch tons of stuff. Granted, don't expect marlin or anything like that, but it's still good to eat and you're always catching something, so if you lose a fish oh well drop another line and wait 5-10 mins, you'll probably get the same bastard or his buddy.
