This is going to sound batshit but I lived with an Appalachian family in the deep hollers for two months on an anthropology project. They live like indigenous people with access to some modern tech like how to not down in feces. It's that bad. I ate squirrel, raccoon, possum, and black bear. There was a lot of incest and abuse. When people are that poor and have that much free time they get up to some crazy shit. One time they treed a black bear with hounds but the bear was a big boy so it couldn't climb high. The bear ended up killing 5 dogs. They didn't shoot the thing they just wanted to see the dogs tear into it. Kids would be fucking each other at 12 and getting pregnant at 14. Another community near by that has more farm land had an insurance scam going where they'd lose a limb in purpose to get a pay out.

Don't let people idealize real rural life. These communities have reverted. It's become an interesting way to research the origins of society.
