One time when I was little I was at a fancy restaurant with my family and ordered french toast and they served it with a big ball of butter/margarine on top and I thought it was a donut hole so I put the whole thing in my mouth but felt disgusted and tricked so I started silently crying but I didn't spit it out because my dad told me beforehand to be on my best behavior.

Ended up eating the whole thing eventually and kept crying and my dad asked why I was crying and I couldn't explain exactly why I just kept saying "that wasn't a donut!" he spanked me later that morning and now I'm vegan

When I was a kid my mom took me to an IHOP and left me there as soon as I got my food. She had a gambling problem, so I'm guessing she hit the slots somewhere. Eventually the waitresses started noticing that I was alone. They took me to the employee area or whatever it's called until my mom came back but she never did. After the third day or so one of the waitresses said I need to earn my keep if I wanna stay, since I didn't have a home anymore. They made me grow my hair out, put makeup on me and dressed me in girls clothes so I could earn more tips for them. I suspect they gave me estrogen as well but I'm not sure. After about 8 years of this, that particular IHOP closed down and I was finally free. But ever since then, I don't know what to do with my new found freedom, I feel a profound emptiness. Sometimes I find myself sitting alone at an empty table at an IHOP, hoping that the staff notices me and takes me in once again...

My college cafeteria being run by Aramark will forever take the cake.

What usually comes to mind for specific instances is going to a buffet with my dad and trying to use the restroom only to have everything I touched fall apart. The urinal fell off the wall when I tried to flush the old piss then the stall door fell off when I went in there to take a piss. Then some redguard tried to fight my dad because he had apparently just called the dude's gf ugly in the parking lot even though we had clearly been in the restaurant for a while.

Just moved out of the city recently and actually found a Mexican place with decent reviews nearby. Go in, the place is smoky af, like when you leave a greasy pan on the hot stove and it smokes kind of smoke. Empty. Woman at the counter looks depressed. We order a couple burritos to go and sit down to wait. She puts the order in and the only other guy there just sits looking at his phone for a good 3 mins after she tells him. Finally he gets up and puts a couple tortillas on the grill.. OK maybe it won't be too bad. He disappears into the back for 10 mins.
Hear microwave beeping incessantly. We take the food and drive home.
It's bad. Like, prison food bad.

I actually felt so sorry for these people I couldn't bring myself to shit on them on yelp. They just looked demoralized. You can't be in a good place if you're serving that slop to people. I even think the chicken came from a can. Just vile.

Keep in mind this was before Google reviews, yelp etc were a thing but word of mouth from multiple sources indicated that it was a good restaurant. We then told the hotel clerks and tour guide this and they said they haven't been there in like 3 years

Not really a horror story but still disappointing. I went to this place called ward's hamburgers in bumfuck whiteville NC since it was on my route and I have heard people raving about it. I looked it up and it seemed to be one of those hole in the wall places that has a very limited but cheap selection and it's supposedly really good.
There was a line out the door that took about 20 minutes to wait through, and I ordered 2 cheeseburgers all the way for like 6 bucks. They only put raw white onions, mustard, and "chili" on it since that's all they got.
Anyway, the burger was flavorless and not bound at all, it was almost like a loose meat sandwich. The chili was the same burger meat in a shitty grease sauce with no flavor but fat, and the bitterness of their onion did nothing to complement the flavor. It was unappetizing and bordering on inedible, so I only ate half of one and gave the other to a homeless guy. 2/10

So I ordered the dry aged ribeye, medium rare. Goddamn thing comes out medium well. I wouldn't really care at a Chilis or whatever, but this was a $50 steak. I told them to cook up a fresh one and not give me what had clearly been in the warming tray. They sat me as a guest shortly before closing, but that doesn't mean they can jerk me around.

Then they turned the lights down just before my steak came out, and that made me suspicious. I was expecting to see another overcooked steak, so I whipped out my cell phone for light. What they brought me was cooked perfectly, but also had a nice fat loogie on it, not quite concealed by mushrooms. Snapped a pic, then I called the manager over as if to praise the food, and I asked him "what the fuck is this?". He tried to tell me the slimy, cogent mass was "butter". I told him I was ready to call the police, and he freaked out and said he'd make it right. So I watched from the bar as they cooked the biggest goddamn steak I've ever seen, gave me a nice bottle of wine, a slice of cheesecake, and didn't charge me a goddamn thing.

What's funny is that the owner of the co-man that I was there to support brought us to the same steakhouse the next night and damned if I didn't get the biggest steak again.
