Bread soup is one of the comforting peasant dishes that every cuisine has some equivalent of. Asian cuisines have rice porridges of various types. Euro cuisines have dishes that use bread and other grains like oats to stretch the food supply. Latin America has dishes like tamales that stretch the food supply with corn. Every cuisine has food like this, stuff that is really cheap yet comforting.
