It was a national icon, probably predating girl scouts cookies. Boy Scouts of America was as associated with the popcorn fundraiser as Girl Scouts is with their cookies. That said, the popcorn tins got more expensive and cookies are ultimately more popular than popcorn. That and the supplier changed multiple times which hurt buyer loyalty. BSA still sells popcorn so far as I know. Though so few boys participated in my troop that we relied on Christmas tree sales.

It’s peak soulless corporation that Keebler is selling the “knock-offs” since Little Brownie Bakers (one of the two companies that makes the cookies for the Girl Scouts) is a division of Keebler, and not only did Keebler (while they were owned by Kellogg’s) start selling these in grocery stores but I’d be surprised if Keebler isn’t charging the Girl Scouts almost as much per box as it costs to just buy a box of the Keebler ones in the store.
