basically all of it. most people just parrot "brit food bad" because they're NPCs but I have gotten into it with some real people and they think it's bland because it's all medieval peasant food like stew and roast dinners. only it's the 21st century and you can procure pretty much any spice or herb from anywhere. not to mention all the herbs that have grown here for centuries. I guarantee 90% of people that say brit food is bad have never tried any of it. with that said, some recommendations

I genuinely wonder how much the "lol British food is le bad lol" comes from American soldiers being here in the war, seeing what British food is like under rationing (which they didn't have to abide by) and then going home and telling their families about how terrible the food was without realising it wasn't the norm, which was then parroted by their children when they grew up to be TV comedians?

Bong here - last night I had
Chicken bhuna with reaper chilli's and no I'm not a pajeet.

Baking and dessert-making are top notch. British sweets are great, and pastry often rescues savoury baked goods. People understand sweets and working with sugar. Savoury dishes are whole different kettle of fish, with a whole slew of problems that bring it down for the most part:
>The national palate is extremely bland and the seasonings used don't create exciting, memorable, or enjoyable flavour profiles
>The soil in the UK is filled with acidic loams that tamper with the flavour of crops and livestock
>The UK passed all sorts of legislation in the 70s-90s that outright banned ALL sorts of typical modern preservatives, including good ones that help maintain flavour and nutrients. British food goes off and spoils much faster as a result, as well
>The nation has spent the last century moving away from farm fresh and going all into processed food as necessity due to the poor economic climate of the post-War period. The typical meals that people ate growing up, that their parents ate and passed down, and their grandparents ate/came up with are not particularly flavourful and exciting due to war rationing and keep passing it down because it's what they are used to. British culture is very habitual, including food culture
>Most recipes can be generalised as "Beige slop baked at 180C for 30 mins" Many items are just variations of roasts/casseroles/pies with a different selection of items
>Because people habitual develop bland tastes that they're used to and comfortable with, foreign foods and recipes are bastardised to an extreme degree to be palatable, both at home and in restaurants. This is getting much, MUCH better in recent years though
>Fast food is plagued by low effort deep frying and imitations at more universally-known food brands' items
>People who do try to be inventive with recipes often come up with recipes that are just overly verbose and fancy, without paying consideration to flavour profiles

A lot of time it's the preparation that people are against - gravy is a beverage, batter is inches thick, etc. Lots of root veggies - potatoes, turnip, carrot, etc. The seasoning tends to be fairly light - rosemary, thyme, parsley, dill, nigella, that kind of thing, unless we're talking chipshop curry.

It can be given a complex spin, but for the most part it's very simple - meat and potatoes, breads... Scandi/German food with the occasional French twist, kind of like the people.

Unfortunately a lot of them do just get served with potatoes but most green, root or pickled foods are brought to the table in civilised households to any of those meals. The main reason the additions aren't shown is because things like pies aren't cooked with the veg inside/there's no traditional pairing. For example bubble and squeak can be included in a full English despite them being listed as two entirely separate meals.
