Hey /ck/ poorfag here. I wanted to know what foods I should be adding to my diet to make sure I'm getting most of my nutrients and shit. My daily diet consists of oatmeal with milk and peanut butter in the mornings sometimes scrambled eggs and pinto beans, pinto beans and brown rice usually as an afternoon meal, and maybe 3 or 4 days of the week I have some beef stew, which has celery, carrot, onion, and potatoes in it along with beef of course. I feel like I'm missing out on the vegetable and fruit side, but I'd like to hear you guys' advice. Thanks in advance lads.

ive been experimenting with lentil soups for months:
caramelized onion base
regular and red lentils, can add broken down split yellow peas to thicken it while keeping the lentils more intact
season with cardamom, coriander and of course lemon zest, parsley
can add any sort of vegetables like carrots or broccoli to it or sausages as you please, its really fun to mess around with and impossible to fuck up.

Frozen stuff can actually be more nutritious because it can be picked when ripe then immediately frozen which preserves it. Some nutrition is lost when produce sits on a shelf for a while, like vitamin C goes down over time.

idk how expensive cardamom powder is but very little is needed anyway since its pretty strong stuff. also not necessary
sausage can be added instead of salt for a bit of salty greasy flavour. depends on the sausage but im good with a single slice usually.
also learn to caramelize onions the non poverty way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvhSopdCZz8
think i use a table spoon of oil per week and whatever else comes out the single slice of sausage and thats it.

I think frozen vegetables are a false good idea. Sure, frozen peppers are cheaper than out of season fresh peppers, and sure, they have more vitamin C than potatoes per calorie or by weight. Similarly, brussels sprouts or kale or broccoli are more nutritious than cabbage per calorie and by weight. But per dollar? Not in a million years. You can absolutely cover your vitamin needs with potatoes, cabbage, onions and carrots and they all keep for a very long time. And they're all cheaper than frozen veggies.

Yeah, sounds like you need some greens.
Frozen spinach is cheap and keeps well- good in eggs, stews, soups, and if you're feeling fancy quiches. Canned tomatoes are also pretty cheap and in addition to providing vitamin C could also brighten some of your cooking up with their acidity.
For fruit, whatever you like that's in season, apples and bananas stay cheap year round.

Just like it's easier for (you) to transport and store frozen veg/fruit it's also easier for the grocery store to do so. They'll buy 6 tons of fresh raspberries or whatever for your local supermarket but if people don't buy them in time, and often they won't, or if they get banged up while being stocked, they may lose up to 20% of that produce before they can sell it- this is reflected in their pricing.

Thanks mate. I figured I was ok in most departments except for vegetables and another anon posted a helpful chart that showed the vitamins and minerals in a lot of them. As for tomatoes I think I'll skip on that because I have reflux issues.

So much of your diet sounds like what they have in prison, but now I'm kind of craving oatmeal with peanut butter, sugar and cinnamon.

I can't help you with your diet though, I can only talk about mine. I'm doing keto. I was up to 276, currently I'm at 246. I alternate keto and intermittent fasting. I'm on day three of a fast, no food for three days. Tomorrow I'll have a cheat day. It seems to be really difficult for me to get lower than this for some reason, once I start eating again I could jump back practically to 260.

Tomorrow I'll go get groceries and I'll have a cheat meal. My groceries will be as follows:
Water
Spam
Green Onions
Mushrooms
Those zero calorie noodles I forget the name of.
Chicken
Beef
Slim Jims
Pork Rinds
Sugar Free Jello
Sugar Free Pudding
Pumpkin Seeds
Shrimp
Salads
Salmon packs (to put on the salads)
Keto tortillas
Keto bread
Eggs
Hot dog (though I don't much like the keto buns I've been getting. Not very soft.)
Almond Butter
Almond Milk
Keto coffee/espresso
Cheese, Pepperoni (I have a shitload of almond flour for keto pizza)
Cherry Pepsi Zero
Dr Pepper Zero
A shitload of those zero calorie drink mixes

Next month I plan to try Magic Spoon (keto cereal) Built Bar and maybe HelloFresh, I can't find a good keto meal kit place that lets you see all the meals ahead of time. I'm open to other suggestions for keto/weight loss snacks.

Well in prison I'd imagine the plan is to waste as little money as possible on prisoners food. Oh and a cheat day after a 3 day fast? Doesn't seem like a good idea mate. I fasted for 5 days once and let me tell you, the day after I couldn't hardly eat lol. I ended up reading that pigging out after a long fast can send your body into shock and fucking kill you lmao. Apparently some of the 600 holocaust survivors died after they were given candy bars by the allies. Congrats on the weight loss though, I know it's tougher when you're that heavy but you seem to be crushing it. You ever think about not eating bread and tortillas? Also Magic Spoon is pretty tasty for a healthy snack, I suggest Original and Mapple Waffle.
