Not Golden Corral, but it's a buffet story. When I was a kid, there was a SUPER popular Chinese buffet in my town. It was a ton of Americanized Chinese food, but they also had some things for the kids, a salad bar, a dessert bar, etc.

My dad and I had just gotten our food and my dad was facing the buffet. We watched this guy come lumbering in, a good 3 or 4 inches of gut hanging down below his shirt, and start loading up a plate. Fried rice, lo mein, sweet and sour pork with sauce, general tso's, broccoli beef. Just when you think the plate could possibly hold any more, he waddles over to the mashed potatoes, slops two huge scoops over his Chinese food, and then ladles gravy all over the whole thing.

It was haunting.

I had a really cute waitress. At the end of my gorge fest, I asked her for coffee. She brought me some without creamer and without sugar. Plain black coffee. I'm not even an old man, but I was fine with it and didn't want to complain.

You may not know the difference between poor and unclassy, or that they are always related somehow.
There are friends who go out to dine together, and a choice like GC allow them to agree that there will be somethign for everyone's taste, as little and as much as they want, free flowing coffee and diner food choices of every type. No split check or arguments other than who tips the most. Dessert optional and you don't even need to hold up the other people to get it and linger.
The negative stereotype about GC is that it's only fat overeaters there, because though they might be there, they're not the only customers.
The bad thing that is actually bad about them is like any buffet that isn't manned, people have germs on their hands and you share ladles and spoons with them. No one actually polices someone who might reuse a plate and spread HepA or whatever they have wrong with them. The floor may be sticky, as might be your chair back, the food may be actually wrecked....and no one actually cares to monitor all that. Buffets are surely on the way out.

Sorry that happened to you. In my own family, I was always accompanied by a parent to the restroom when I was a child. Always. Every. Single. Time. I've seen my Aunt or Uncle walk right into the restroom no matter the gender, just to see if it was empty first, before sending their child in and guarding the door until they were done.

This won't help you now for yoursel, but just know it's utterly abnormal for a child to be allowed to go alone to a bathroom and everyone should learn this lesson before they have their own children. You can't laze out, not even once.

I have a fond memory of going there with my grandpa. He treated me like a son. I didn't grow up with a dad.

On one of my birthdays, everyone asked me where I wanted to eat out on my special night. Grandpa said "Golden corral!".

So we all headed down to the restraunt. As per usual, my mom tried to get the free 'birthday' meal for me. And if that didn't work, she'd say i'm the age for the reduced kids buffet price.

My family and family friends would always go to the Golden Corral whenever I was there and it always shocked me at how I was one of the skinniest people there.

I went there late one night with my friend half an hour before closing on a Tuesday and it was really nice because there were only 3-4 other families in the building. The waiter was really attentive because he didn't have anything else to be doing. He was a very nice Latino man named Mike. The food also looked like it had been put out just recently and all of it was surprisingly decent for how much hate it gets online. I honestly didn't even know what kind of food they served so I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's actually southern cuisine, "soul food" as the colored folks call it. I ate two filled plates and then a small plate of dessert and some soft serve. I remember enjoying everything other than the macaroni and cheese, as the cheese sauce was overly thick and the pasta was overcooked. I used the bathroom to wash my hands after eating and it was very clean, again unexpected of such an establishment. Overall I really enjoyed the experience but I imagine that it's not nearly as nice at a busier time of day.

Went for the first and last time this past week. Place was absolutely packed, every table full of what can only be described as trailer trash. The general manager was working the register and he sounded comically depressed, like he would have shot himself then and there if he had a gun in his hand. The table we picked was next to this sad, chatty old man who kept asking every employee he saw about various waitresses he wanted to talk to, and would not shut up to let the female servers actually do their job.
As for food, I wanted a plate of broccoli with cheese sauce, but every time someone was finished with the cheese ladle some other hamplanet would come through like a freight train. After the third lard elemental materialized in front of me I decided I wasn't going to wait that long and just sat down with a sad plate of chicken and mashed potatoes.
The only thing about the visit that qualified as "nice" was when I was went to grab ice cream. I muttered something like "oh, tiny bowls" and a passing waitress informed me I was allowed to grab the larger soup bowls to use for ice cream, and if I wanted anything bigger the kitchen staff would happily oblige. Thinking back on it though, I'm shocked that's a regular enough occurrence for her to think it was information I even needed. Truly a uniquely American experience, and I usually love my country.

Golden Corral is based. It's in the same category of Cici's pizza and shit, where you can just go for the cheap eats, avoid obviously not safe foods, and you get a show, every time. Those types of places are filled with weirdos of all types. The best people-watching you'll ever do, all while tucked away in a corner, free to get as much or as little food you want. Sauteed mushrooms make me rock hard, and it's VERY possible to just get a whole ass plate of that or anything else. I also saw some motherfucker with a blatantly racist t-shirt. And for giggles, on the way out, I tipped off the waitresses, the old one who wants to die and the young dumb one with tits the size of her tiny head. Walked out smiling. The very first time I went I was witness to "the recon." This is a real thing, and what I am about to describe is not an isolated incident, no sirree. Humongously fat people will literally go scout the buffet. Now, I think we all do this to some extent at a buffet, in the "Hmm, what do they have to eat here?" glance-while-walking-to-the-table sense, but this is done with military precision, people. I've watched with my own eyes three people, all of whom were 300 lbs+, meet briefly and talk, then split up and go to the buffets, carefully eyeballing each selection, lips moving, fingers pointing, as if cataloging the unearthly delights that await them, then fucking meeting back up in the same place to discuss what they saw and plan an attack. I'm serious. They were like 10 feet away.

Pulled pork was kind of crusty but I think if we dug down a bit there's good stuff there. Now Pizza Ranch is fucking awesome and they've been updating existing restaurants + expanding the chain so it's getting to be pretty good quality. Their dessert pizzas come with different fruit now.

Only been once. It wasn't terrible, Selection was pretty poor, and as I went a little earlier to beat the rush the food sat out for a while. Also the drinks were ridiculously expensive, considering how much I already paid (and that with a coupon). Overall a very disappointing experience. There's a local regional chain called Chuck a Rama, which is as good as it sounds, and that still beats GC in every area.

In middle school, like 20 years ago, when we'd travel for choir competitions this was the place our director always made us go eat after. She'd claim it was because it was more affordable than a normal chain restaurant like Chili's (not really true -- back then Golden Corral was like $11 per person with a drink and pretty much any entree at a mid-range chain restaurant was that price or less), but the truth was she was a big fat lady and wanted to eat a lot. Even when I was 11 or 12 I knew it was hospital cafeteria-tier.

As an adult, I think buffet restaurants are really weird. They trick even non-fatass people into eating way too much. At home, you'd never have two or three full-size plates of a balanced meal; you'd have your first helping of everything, then maybe a small second portion of the dish you liked best. But at a buffet, people will have two or three plates of heavy food without a second thought.
