The best sushi place in our town has fallen from grace, selling mostly those maki-monstrosities. Everything is tempura or smoked tuna/salmon, crusted in panko, and drizzled with bbq sauce or sriracha. Sure, I can still order straight tuna or salmon maki, but this shit just seems out of control.

Cheap gimmicky rolls made with cheap ingredients is what made “sushi” explode with popularity to the point you can find it in damn near any podunk town being eaten by people who have never even seen an ocean now.
For people of average or below income, ordering a retardedName-roll the size of their forearm vs paying the same for ~3pcs of nigiri is a simple choice of economics.

You eat it for Setsubun. The point is that it contains 7 ingredients to represent the Shichifukujin. The ingredients themselves are immaterial.
You must also eat the roll without slicing it, while facing a certain direction, and do so in silence without speaking at all.

I'll guess without evidence that 95% of everything is served from fish farms from the same general areas, frozen then shipped. Only thing I get that isn't prepacked and frozen is salmon and yellowfin tuna, but I freeze it anyway because A: it would spoil before I used it all and B: extra food safety precaution.
