What is umami? It's like all the food people decided "Okay, we have all these names for different flavors in English, we have sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and savory. But let's add a new one and leave the name in Japanese for some reason so nobody knows what the fuck it's supposed to mean." I don't get it.

Take a ramen seasoning packet and sprinkle a little on some cream cheese, sour cream, or yogurt. Eat on a cracker. Compare seasoned vs unseasoned. That is the fabled umami.

"Brothy" or "Savory" are better descriptors. Japanese get to name it because they refined it in the purest sense from seaweed into MSG, a flavor that has terrified white women for decades.

Umami is almost alway mixed with salt, which is what’s considered “savory”. So umami is just the savory flavor without the salt, which is rare in food. You could just say savor and be right 99% of the time. Get a bottle of MSG is you want to know what it tastes like. Spoiler: it tastes like bland chicken broth

savory or umami is like the flavor inside of soy sauce, or tomatoes or onions or garlic. there's savory flavors in meat as well. it's that thing you taste when you caramelize onions or that thing in steak sauce that isn't sweet or salty or spicy.

it's not rare it's just covered up and hidden within many foods. like baked apples have a hidden layer of savory flavor underneath the other flavors. even plain oats made into bread have this savory umami thing hidden beneath the earthy nutty carb flavors but its very subtle

Why do you faggots always get mad about the word?
You'll gladly talk about how you JULIENNE'd (sliced into thin strips) some veggies and are going to SAUTE (cook in a shallow pan on high heat) them, melt chocolate in a BAIN-MARIE (double boiler) and boast how you, naturally, maintain MISE EN PLACE (have ingredients prepared and ready before you start cooking) but the moment someone says the u-word your jaw tenses up, fists clench and eyebrows contort into a soyjak grimace as you complain that there's already a way to describe the taste in English.

Savory IS the flavor of salt, retarded weebs. It just so happens to be subtle enough for people used to ungodly amounts of salts not to realize they are tasting salt.
