>> No.17239881

Because the properties of oil +water, it just spreads the fuel (oil/grease) around instead of smothering the fuel source.

There's also the reaction of hot oil + water that I forget, but I think that plays a part in it too.

>> No.17239883

>>17239875
Water and grease are different densities and don't mix. In non grease fires, water smothers the fuel, but when water is poured in burning grease, the grease is displaced and floats while still burning. When this happens the fire spreads, as more unburning grease gets ignited and creates a rush-in of fresh oxygen due to lower air pressure.
Thermodynamics is fun desu.

Not enough water to smother the flame. Too much fuel burning a fire too hot. It's why you have extinguishers in kitchens.

>> No.17239916

>>17239898
Water doesn't extinguish fire directly, it smothers the fueo and cuts off oxygen, which chokes the flame out. Water can't smother grease because grease is too dense.

Sure, if you put a dumptrucks worth of water on a standard kitchen grease fire it would deprive the fire of oxygen and put it out. But you're not going to have that much water on hand.

I'm a manager at walmart. A couple months ago I was reorganizing our freezer. I was alone. Our retarded overnight crew stacks merchandise almost to the ceiling, like 20 feet in the air. I was on a ladder, pulling a case of fries (pretty heavy like 35-40lb) off the top of a stack, lost my balance and fell off the ladder onto my back. Luckily I landed fine and wasn't injured, but that scared the absolute shit out of me. That freezer is below 0, you lose feeling in your fingers after about 10 minutes even with insulated gloves. Most spooked I've been in a while.

Water isn’t some anti-fire magic like it is in video games. The reason dousing a wood fire works is cause the water displaces the air and suffocates the fire. With a grease fire the water just pushes the grease everywhere increasing the surface area of the combustible material(oil) and making a much larger fire. So on a fire with solid fuel, water is great. Liquid fuel though just spreads it out.

I once heard a firefighter explain the same thing
water actually doesn't smother the flame but lowers the temperature of whatever is burning

Kinda makes sense if you think about a burning log of wood
If you spray it with water, the flame will go out initially, but once the water evaporates and the log is still hot enough, the flame will return
Seems counterintuitive, but its the kind of "akshually" knowledge that your brains likes to keep for whatever reason

I always thought water makes grease fires worse because the water goes beneath the grease (as others have said, it's less dense than grease) and then once under the grease it immediately evaporates and turns to steam, and it's this immediate and rapid process of the water exploding into steam that aerosolifies the grease and results in fire everywhere due to the surface area of the grease being increased by a million.

as water comes in contact with the searing grease it immediately changes state from liquid to gas, rapidly expanding by a factor of 1600.
this rapid expansion picks up the oil and essentially creates a fuel-air mixture that is rich in oxygen.
fuel+oxygen(the aerosol'd oil) + a source of ignition ( in this case the pre-existing fire) = boom.

The problem is you don't bargain collectively. You just let the higher-ups take your dues and cut deals that may or may not screw you over but definitely work to their benefit. The only difference between them and the people who own your company is that they give you the perception of having a say in the matter.

Not with oil though; grab that burning log of yours and toss it onto a pond, the water has smothered the flame.
Firefighters have a special foaming agent they can add to the stream to SMOTHER an oil fire.

Management at the Harvestime bakery in Leicester, England, requested that maintenance be performed on the 75-foot-long oven, so they called in two men to repair the bread-baking oven. The oven, which had a conveyor belt inside, had only been shut off for two hours instead of the mandated 12 hours when David Mayes, 47, and Ian Erickson, 43, crawled inside, according to the Daily Mail.

After a few minutes, the workers sent panicked messages over a radio that one of the men had carried in with him, expressing that the oven was too hot. The oven’s conveyor belt had no reverse mechanism, and the men were carried through the oven, which was still a scorching 212 degrees. It took 17 minutes for the men to pass through the oven.

Erickson made it through the oven with intense burns and later died on the floor of the bakery in front of employees. Mayes was trapped inside and later freed by the fire department. He sustained burns over 80 percent of his body and was pronounced dead at the scene.
