Go to any Ethiopian restaurant and their typical meal will be a plate of injera with various meat and veggie dishes around it. This is ideal if you're new to Ethiopian food and wanna try it for the first time. You tear off some injera and use it to scoop from the dishes. This way you can try like 4-5 different dishes at the same time. You really can't fuck it up

Injera is quite sour though it's an acquired taste, if you're new it might be better to add sour cream to the meat you're scooping with injera to make the tastes less intense

Most white people are afraid of authentic Chinese food because they think they're gonna get served bat soup/dog meat or some other crazy shit, and I can't blame them. But in case anyone ITT is curious, there is a world outside of the Jewish American (yes, most American Chinese food is a Jewish creation, look it up) Chinese food.

Guys just think about what you're eating; they jam a shit load of sugar and HFCS into every dish and it all ends up with a sickly sweet sugary glaze on everything. I can understand why you guys like it, but there are alternatives.

First of all, any Chinese restaurant with the words "China", "Star", "Buffet", "Wok", "garden", "station", "Express", and "Chopsticks" are gonna be your inauthentic Americanized Chinese restaurants. If you don't care and just want your orange chicken and egg roll combo, well now you know what to look for, but there are more authentic Chinese dishes that still match the American palate. Not all authentic Chinese food is boiled dog assholes or whatever you're thinking.

pic related is my go to order at the best Chinese restaurant near me. From left to right: 椒鹽豆腐/Sichuan Pepper and Salt Tofu, 重慶辣子雞/Chongqing Fried Chicken, 乾扁四季豆/Sichuan Style Green Beans, 水煮牛/Beef in spicy broth (beef strips cooked in a spicy Chinese broth). This meal is totally in line with the American palate; its got fried stuff, recognizable ingredients, and the spices are good to balance the meal. You can almost certainly find all 4 of these items at your local Chinese restaurant; look specifically for Sichuan places.

Total cost: $45; enough food for me and a few friends, or just myself with leftovers just for me for a few days. Of course it's pricier than just getting a "#6 combo with extra fried rice", but again you can have leftovers. Don't let your fear of the unknown stop you from trying actually good authentic Chinese food. Try ordering Pic related next time.

Here's a better Pic of the plate. I only ever go with white rice. In Chinese dining etiquette (look away now if you don't care, I understand if you don't this part is just for people who are extra autistic/wanna be super authentic), you load up a small handheld bowl with rice, you grab a plate full of each of the dishes, then you go to town on your plate, all while picking up the rice bowl with one hand and using the chopsticks to shovel rice into your mouth. You don't use the chopsticks to pick up clumps of rice. And if you're at a restaurant with company, you never use your personal chopsticks to pick up food directly that's on the lazy Susan, there's always a service spoon/tongs that go with each dish. Here's a pro tip if you guys are ever in a group of Chinese people who you're close with, but they gotta be good friends: if there's only one serving tongs and they're in use, you can just turn over your chopsticks and use the other side to pick stuff up. Don't do this in front of non friends or family though.

Sure you could spend a bit extra and go with fried rice, but I'm not about that life; I don't like American Chinese fried rice, plus we don't typically eat it with our meals; for us it's mostly a leftovers thing that you cook up quickly for breakfast. I'm not denigrating your choices, I just would never hock out extra money for some shittily fried rice.

Finally in case any of you are curious, typically we don't eat specially created desserts in Chinese cuisine. Typically, we just have fruit. Most of the time it's a plate of orange or watermelon slices. If I'm making Chinese food at home for friends, I like to compromise and do a fruit medley.

You can do whatever you like of course, including ignoring my posts completely. But in case any of you were ever curious about a more authentic approach to Chinese food that doesn't involve eating a bunch of food you're too afraid to try, well here you go.
