i am pretty sure its complexed tannins and minerals (perhaps some proteins as well) that make the iridescent sheen on top.

not particularly besides being unsightly and potentially a sign of water which is harder than ideal.
>How do i get rid of it?
using softer water can help but it may also depend on the tea.

it can happen other teas but i do think it is more noticeable or prevalent with black tea.

I can't imagine it would taste very good, but feel free to try and report results.

Coffee makers are all about putting your coffee through the hottest possible water, right? Teas don't really benefit from too hot water (on the contrary), so it will probably not be great.

I've heard some people using french press for tea, which sounds like viable alternative for casual drinking.

It tastes exactly like making it in a large teapot. I use about 1/4 tsp kopili estate assam per serving size. The only difference is that since you stir this thing, the steeping time is about 2 minutes instead of 5 minutes.
>Coffee makers are all about putting your coffee through the hottest possible water, right?
No, it depends on the roast. Coffee making temperatures range from about 150F all the way up to a rolling boil. The way I used it this time it's about 200F which is about right for a strong black tea for me. 200f is too high for green tea though so I would have to get out a teapot or something for it.

I got some gyokuro. When does it start getting good?

First steep, I do 2 minutes at 100f. After that, I just do 30 second steeps with higher, and higher temps.

The only difference I can tell between this and my regular sencha is the higher quality of leaves and darker green leaves. And that the liquor is more green.

Otherwise, it doesn't taste much different from my go to sencha but costs significantly more. Oh, and I can get more steeps out of it than fukamushi sencha which doesn't have much lasting power.

Different people call it different things, actually "immersion" is probably more common because it's more accurate a term.
>What kind of coffee makers are you talking about?
Siphon pot obviously, but also french press and aero press like other anon's mentioned. Technically Turkish pot kek. I think the rest are all some sort of dripper.
>>17214340
From what I can tell good Sencha's are also shaded. And also from what I can tell, some tea farms use the term Kabusecha to bridge Sencha to Gyokuro, but most do not. So at some point it's just how the individual farm markets the terminology. You must be drinking some good quality Sencha.

If you brew your green tea at low temps, much caffeine won't be extracted

https://www.taiwanteaconnection.com/blogs/news/a-closer-look-brewing-vs-caffeine#:~:text=According%20to%20a%20study%20conducted,caffeine%20to%20dissolve%20into%20tea.

You may be able to find a chart somewhere with temperatures and how much caffeine is extracted at what temperatures.

A 1 minute steep at 70C should have little caffeine. You can even take the temps lower than that, but 70C is the lowest range you'll find of recommended green tea brewing.

Of course, there's cold brewing if you like that and the caffeine will be negligible.

traditional teabags are either plastic or paper. plastic teabags are bad because they use non renewables, aren't recyclable, and leach micro plastics and endocrine disrupters both when you drink from them them and dispose of them. traditional "paper" teabags aren't always safe either. they often add potentially harmful chemicals and adhesives to help increase the strength of the tea bags when wet so they aren't as natural as you would think they would be. the modern "greener" alternatives are using stronger natural fibers without additives (probably the best route besides going loose leaf) or using biodegradable renewable plant derived plastics like PLA. the PG tips you posted uses PLA. from a health standpoint pure Poly(lactic acid) is probably reasonably safe but it can have additives that may not be. additionally biodegradable PLA still takes months to fully break down even in and ideal composter and suffers from the fact most people will just throw compostables into the landfill anyways. you can also recycle it but it requires its own processing line that not everywhere has. its got limitations but i would say PLA bioplastic usage is still a step in the right direction if implemented properly.

Can you qualify “good”?
Are you looking to make the flavor more intense?
Are you brewing it the same as your sencha?
Everything else being equal, like amount of leaves/water/time/temp, the gyokuro should have a more pronounced flavor and more astringency (which is why it’s typically recommended to do gyokuro at a lower temp).
They’re basically the same plant, with the main difference being gyokuro is forced to produce more chlorophyll by shading before harvesting. The extra labor involved, plus the much lower total production than senxha is where the price comes from.

>PLA isnt biodegradable
it can be, but it degrades slowly in topsoil conditions especially large chunks of pure PLA. some PLA formulations and uses allow it to break down much faster. for example many of those PLA coated plant fiber take out food containers break down rapidly in just a regular backyard compost heap or worm bin. but yes those clear plastic PLA drinking cups take a while and are not generally practical for at home compost (though they still breakdown much faster than conventional plastics and leave less undesirable breakdown products). some municipalities have composting (or recycling) facilities that can accept PLA. PLA is not a complete substitute for reducing disposable plastic use. I am aware of its limitations and tried to acknowledge them as best as possible in my original post without writing a whole essay on the subject.

>Congenital abnormalities: A Taiwanese study of nearly 400,000 individuals found that women who were exposed to trihalomethanes in chlorinated water while pregnant were more likely to give birth to children with one of three different birth abnormalities: cleft palates, ventricular septal defects — or holes in the heart — and lack of brain development.
>Food allergies: One recent study analyzed the effects of dichlorophenols, which are used both in pesticides and in water chlorination. The study found that participants with the highest levels of dichlorophenols in their bodies were more likely to have the most food allergies. This study focused on dichlorophenols in pesticides, though — not in chlorinated water, though the effects may be similar.
>Bladder and rectal cancer: A 1995 study published in Environmental Health Perspectives implicated the THM byproducts of water chlorination in bladder and rectal cancer — potentially accounting for 8,000 cases of rectal cancer and 5,000 cases of bladder cancer in the United States every year. Some subsequent studies have found a slight link between chlorine and carcinogenic effects, but other studies have found no link. More research on the subject is necessary.
>Asthma symptoms: One study suggests that exposure to chlorine in swimming pools is associated with increased exercise-induced asthma symptoms in swimmers, even if the swimmers have had no previous asthma symptoms, and even if the chlorine levels in the pool are below the recommended safe levels. When you bathe or shower in chlorinated water, you also absorb chlorine through your skin and breathe in chlorinated steam. If you experience respiratory problems, breathing in chlorine can aggravate the symptoms.

Blending multiple types of tea always taste terrible to me. It becomes a muddled mess. I think its a novelty and nothing more. Good tea is always better alone or highlighted by other herbs/spices in a blend.

I figure it’s much like blending coffee or whiskey; being able to do it in such a way that it becomes greater than the sum of its parts requires serious knowledge/experience.
So I’ll leave it up to the pros and just buy some of their Happy Lucky Ching Chong Blend #6, now with a touch more Happy and Chong.

If so, I got myself a 4-cup Chatsford pot (and couple pounds of cheap black tea - generic stuff from Ceylon and Yunnan) for my desk at work. It's a nice improvement over the 2-cup brewer (same style as the "ingenuitea," don't know what they're called properly) that didn't produce quite enough volume of tea each morning/afternoon. Only drawback to this is that I'm running to bathroom a whole lot more often now...

Funny, green teas are my favorite to granpa brew. I like how they become bit too bitter at the end, but are quite light at the beginning.

I generally use tea with stronger flavor, because that way it feels more... balanced between top and bottom of the cup.

I was given some loose leaf tea a while ago, but idk what it is, I believe it was bought in China, but it might be Japanese too.

I bought some jiaogulan loose leaf tea due to its purported health benefits and naturally sweet taste. It's a brand called na'vi and the tea is grown organically in Thailand so seems good quality. However, when I made it for the first time today it tasted like warm water just like every tea I make. What am I doing wrong? I'd also like to preface that I can taste other things normally, it's just tea I have problems with.

First trial:
Infused ½-⅔ tsp of leaves in 300ml of tap water at 75°C for 4 minutes
>Tasted like warm water
Second trial:
Infused same leaves (can be done 2-3 times) but this time in 250ml of filtered water at 90°C for 10-15 minutes
>Tasted exactly the same as before

I looked up various methods online and my second trial was the closest one to them but it was still bland. Are the leaves the problem or is it me?

Does using the keep warm function on a zojirushi water boiler deoxygenate the water or spoil it for making tea? also is an electric kettle with preset temps good enough for serious tea drinking?Up till now i've always just used a regular electric kettle because I've only ever drunk black tea.

Whenever I make a cup of black tea I always dump out the boiled water after each steeping and use fresh water for each subsequent pot. The reason being is that I was always told that boiled water is deoxygenated that it's best to use fresh water. Now that I want to get into green tea, i'm looking to change my kettle out for something so that I can get the temperature to the right temp without having to baby it with a thermometer.

it's piss easy to test whether it's worth it for yourself, make a glass of tea using "fresh" water and one using water that's been boiling for 5-10 minutes, then ask a friend to switch them around and only tell you which was which after you gave your impressions
everyone will have their preference for one reason or other, but testing it out for yourself is better
one thing that I believe is not up to preference though is the fact that, when making black tea, leaving your water to boil long enough for it to get as close as possible to 100°C far outweighs the negative impact the reduced amount of oxygen in the water might have

It's so bad you have to know what you want to buy before you go on Amazon because their search featured is completely useless. In japan i can leisurely browse through 20 pages of champion sweaters without issue.
There are a million other issues. Especially with third party sellers selling expired bug infested food that has been sitting in a hot warehouse but Amazon is destroying large swaths of traditional retail and i would avoid them anyway.

That nigga frotted my cock until he busted on my mouth, I had to return the favor. That nigga Spotemgottem and I been fucking non-stop ever since, but keep that shit on the DL. He does that shit for free. If you're gonna ask me how to "long" Spotemgottem, I'll be deadass. All you gotta do is ask, be straight up, and get physical real quick. Touch his nuts, get on ya knees, talk your shit. He doesn't play around with no pansy-ass niggas either. He likes his men manly, and his dick thick. Dark skin, 6'5 is the minimum and I ain't talking about height boy.

That nigga Spotemgottem stole my heart and drank my sheng.

Japanese Amazon is okay from my limited experience with them. If i was in japan i would rather buy from smaller stores on rakuten for most things. USA amazon is garbage.

according to all the reviews it is supposed to have a sweet taste, perhaps I got a bad batch. I'm going to email the company about my endeavours and see what they say. I don't have any black tea unfortunately but I do have a bunch of other herbal teas which I bought at the same time - rosehip, bamboo, elderflower and lemon balm - so will try brewing them too

If i saw one i liked i would probably buy it but i hate Chinese styles of decoration, everything is over designed and super busy, i don't need a teapot completely covered with engravings of dragons.

Fresh out of the copy machine. I enjoy puerh but why do I not taste swamp water? Superior genes?

Only the ripe stuff is fishy, and it's really not supposed to be. I have had some that definitely havd a fishy funk to them. But it's usually more of a loam, rich compost kind of smell.
If you don't smell even a hint of fish in any of them then it's probably genetic on your part. Or you just haven't spent enough time around fishing docks to know all of the different nuances of fish funk.
