this is the reason I ask because most video reviews state the same thing. I will have enough for one more decent/not an everyday bottle and still not having had any Springbank Single Malt I'm willing to risk it as the other 2 Campbeltown distilleries I've had have been great. Guy at the specialty whisky shop I frequent said they got 5 bottles for 4 stores after 6 months of waiting as their holiday delivery so I'm not gonna be holding my breathe for them until they ramp up production/distribution. Alternatively there's a regular Longrow and Hazelburn 9 yr old finished in Barolo casks thats right around $100. I just got the new Kilkerran Heavily Peated 58.6 Batch 4 so the Longrow is lower on my desire meter than the Hazelburn.

It's mostly a marketing meme for a product which is taking off in sales. There's only a few major distillers, and the name brands are often sold out, so people end up buying a similar brand; which the distillers have no trouble slapping on a new label.

Bourbon is fairly consistent in taste. There's an aging process, the mashbills can vary a bit, but it has to be 51% corn, and the yeast strains are largely preserved from the older days. I believe Brown-Forman uses the same yeast as Heaven Hill. And Four Roses uses the same yeasts as MGP (a master distiller left MGP to form Four Roses), although Four Roses are upfront on specifying the types of yeasts the use.

Are you retarded? The point of whiskey is to taste the grain. The point of vodka is to not taste the grain. Whiskey comes off the stills usually at 70%abv. Vodka comes off at 95%. That’s a big difference in flavor. At 70% you can taste the corn barley or whatever it’s made from. At 95% it’s very difficult to tell the difference obviously.

Every whiskey has it’s own rules. But this is bourbon’s. Can’t be distilled higher than 80%abv. To be a vodka and taste like nothing, it’s gotta be 95%abv in the US. Whiskey is not all about LE OAK. It’s about the grains it is made from too. Ideally you want a balance of oak and grain.

Welp I've resisted Glendronach 18 for the last time. The Glenallachie 15 is great. feels more like a Highland than Glendronach 12 which I poured on Christmas before digging into the smorgasbord.

Nosing has a big nuttiness to it like roasted hazelnut. palate is nicely complex with the predominant notes being dark chocolate and orange and some wet wood and sweet tobacco. finish is moderate and still semi sweet. as you can to see I compared it to the 10 year old Cask Strength Batch 2 and Edradour 10 43%. The Edradour is barely comparable as its basically all bitter molasses and sulphur which reminds me of the taste of latex when the dentist goes fingering your gums. The 10 CS is relatively similar with the sweetness, but it aso stands apart with a herbal spicy bouquet that is nothing else than a big sticky Fraser fir during the holidays or what my niece calls "winter cinnamon" ;^)

No dice on the Springbank 10 or 15 probably. My options are basically Balvenie 15 Single Barrel Sherry, Glenfarclas 21/25, Compass Box Oak Cross + Alexander Murphy Bruichladdich 12 Cask Strength(2005)/Glen Oak 17(also Bruichladdich but 40 proof), Singnatory Vintage Ardmore 11 Bourbon after Islay + Arran Polt Finish or Singnatory Ardmore 11
+ Uisquebach Reserve + Evan William's 1783(90 proof) or Jim Black Black. bourbons strictly for taking to a NYE gathering so the more expendable the better. opinions/suggestions welcome.

Glenallachie and Edradour styles are night and day different. while both are both heavy and rich, the Glenallachie is only finished in both PX and Olorosso and Virgin Oak(heavy on the PX) where-as the Edradour has a second maturation in Olorosso only.

Edradour is almost like amaretto its so nutty-sweet, but nearly too dry and simple for me though. Glenallechie 15 is really similar to the Glendronach 12 but better balanced sweetness due to a presence of savory nuaces. While I get more initial enjoyment from the 10 Cask Strength Batch 2 than the 15 its not as balanced. given the Glenallachie isnt fully matured in sherry like Glendronach I'd give the edge to Billy Walker's new squeeze imo. its not quite to blow your socks off amazing, but a solid 9/10.

I'd simply describe Glendronach as fruicake forward and Glenallachie as bananas foster/rum raisin forward and Edradour as chocolate orange and marzipan.

Teachers is good and cheap, but its a cleaner peat to me. Islay peats are always more unrestrained and brutal. not sure the prices in your market but pic related seems to usually be about $30 everywhere which about double what you should be getting Teachers for. I've only had the one bottle of Teachers myself but many others say it can fluctuate on high malt content sometimes but the Compass Box should be fairly consistent. They also make the Peat Monster Blended Malt which will also have a high amount of Laphroaig, but its normally pretty close to what a real bottle of Laphroaig would be as well.

also it may help if you have access to a Costco as they have regular Laphroaig 10 for under $40 before tax.

this particular bottling scored well enough so I took the chance instead of waiting until after the New Year and getting Arran Port, the Signatory Ardmore and Uisquebach Reserve and boy am I glad I did.

Smoke is subtle, funk is present, sherry has a slight sulphur tinge, but not so heavy it ruins the flow and actually coexists with the peat to make this nice round earthy quality. plenty of spices with light fruitiness that leads to soft chocolates and the only nutty flavor I can discern is closest to macadamia. it does feel a little reserved right now, but I have no doubt it'll open up quite nicely.

Can't wait to come back after the holiday and compare my Victoriana and Kilkerran to it. it's going to be hard to beat Victoriana for half the price of what I paid for this though although both of those are Cask Strength so it may not be the most even match given they are likely less than half the age on top of that.

>sherry has a slight sulphur tinge, but not so heavy it ruins the flow
Look at this guy trying to rationalize getting a ruined bottle. It's ruined. I'm sorry you paid so much for a ruined bottle. It's not supposed to taste like that. You got a bottle sourced from a flawed cask that wasn't supposed to be used because it was sterilized with a sulphur candle.

>> No.17200473

>>17200276
nah, it's not that noticeable after sitting for 90 mins. still haven't added water, but the sherry really isn't all that big in the nose or palate. so far it's only sweet without being super distinctly PX/Olorosso/Fino etc. etc.

Isnt the sulphur candle deal only usually used in European Oak? the only other bottle I've noticed the taste on was Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 which also settled down and instead became more tannin dominant.

>> No.17201016

There's a huge genetic component to the detection / dislike of sulphur. You'll get some anons claiming every second bottle is tainted, and some that will say they've never had a problem in their life.

AFAIK you run the risk of getting a sulphur candle-tainted cask with any cask that once held wine. It's most commonly a sherry cask thing because sherry casks are used so heavily for scotch.
>the only other bottle I've noticed the taste on was Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14
The only bottle of whiskey I've ever poured down the drain was a HEAVILY sulfured Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or that smelled and tasted very strongly of rotten eggs. Absolutely undrinkable. Glenmorangie clearly doesn't have someone hand-inspecting/sniffing casks because there's no way that cask would have passed inspection.

>> No.17202398

>>17202391
Oh, that Nectar D'Or was so fucking vile that I tried salvaging it by mixing like one part of it into four parts of Laphroaig 10. Nope. The rotten eggs literally dominated the peat. It was that bad.
