this place was super based. comfy 90's grocery store, it was my favorite as a kid. they had a pay per pound salad bar that was killer. I'd make a massive salad for like $5. they sold jones soda, and my mom would let me get a 4pack. the movie gallery was right next to it as well, however we were more of a 'family video' family since it was right down the street from our house.

Only just realized that's probably a UK image.
For some reason I can't find ALDI images from before like 2010 with google.

PathMark was a shithole. Always felt dingy, I'm glad they went bankrupt.

Dingy alone isn't that great of an indicator unless there's visible signs of filth, lighting not replaced, item shortages other stores lack, etc.
Being not dingy is more indicative of the store being completely renovated in the last decade or so to keep up with trends, or it just being a new building.

They were absolutely dingy, but they had great sales and manager's specials. The one I used to go to inexplicably kept stocking fresh goat's milk despite no one buying it and it always going on manager's special for 75% off, which is when I nabbed it. Sure, it was close to expiry, but I portioned it off and froze it, so it didn't much matter.
Also, the fried chicken was the best of any grocery store fried chicken in this area. Shoprite is too salty. Acme is fucking raw half the time (srsly, no idea how the fuck they haven't been sued into oblivion yet). Whole Foods is too white people-y. Pathmark and SuperFresh (same company) were perfect.

>Whole Foods is too white people-y.
Can you elaborate on that more in the store itself than who shops there?
I really don't care about associating with white people or any people, but I could read that several ways and it really doesn't give a vibe for it. Never even seen a Whole Foods so don't know what to make of it beyond marketing ads.

I meant the chicken itself. It tastes like something Ina Garten would have made, if that makes sense. Just... not southern fried chicken.

This is true. Shoprite chicken is always burnt and salty, Wegmans doesn't even try, Kings is a joke, Whole Foods should just stop, etc.
Their subs were great, too. The other stores don't even try to make them with that attention to detail.
>>17143151
They were dingy but they had great produce, actual produce managers who knew what the produce was like, and they had a pretty good selection.

Never had Wegman's chicken and I don't even know what that fuck Kings is. Not that you mentioned them, but I don't remember if Giant had good chicken or not. I know I've had it, but I guess it didn't leave much of an impression.

As for subs, maybe it's a regional thing because all the supermarket subs in my area are good except Acme. But then, Acme ain't bad, it's just not as good as the others. At only $5, Acme does have the cheapest, but Shoprite's subs (or hoagies, round these parts) are better ($8). Pathmark and SuperFresh fell somewhere between the two.

I used to eat there with my parents all the time as a little kid, my mom even broke water with my little brother in there. Their mac and cheese was the shit, the frozen version you can get at the supermarket just isn't the same.

I remember going there with my dad and sister, both the Whitestone and Elmhurst locations when I was younger. I distinctly remember reading MAD magazines at the Whitestone location, and buying Lego Eggo waffles at the Elmhurst location. Really strange times, I’m thankful for them happening.
