Father was a SUBSAFE era nuker.
What people call SOS today was not the original SOS, but growing up eating both versions quite a bit, it’s far superior to the tomato based sauce on page 35.
I still make the foreskins versions for my boys for breakfast if the ladies are not going to be around. Yes, we call it SOS, the tomato version is best forgotten.
Tips:
When you open the jar of dried beef, fill it with water and let it soak, dumping and refilling it a few times while you make your roux. Too much salt in there rinse some of that crap off.
Black pepper is your main flavoring, but a few drops of worcestershire makes it taste way better, but seriously only a few drops.
Pre make your toast and stick it in the oven on low so that it’s ready as soon as you have the sauce ready. The toast can be hard as a rock and the sauce will make it edible. The sauce starts getting weird within ten minutes of coming off the pan. Having the toast ready let’s you eat during the sweet spot.

>> No.17130157

>>17130132
Shit, almost forgot.
Fuck off with your Pansy ass skim or even 2% milk.
This is military food. Canned milk. Evaporated. NOT SWEETENED CONDENSED, you would not think that needed to be said, but people are fuckups.
If you can’t use canned milk or powdered milk because you are too much of a puss, go for hall and half, heavy cream, or as a last resort whole milk.
If you make this with the slightly white water from the low-fat Walmart economy jug, you will not be happy with the resulting watery meat soup you pour over your bread.

I've made it when all I had was ground beef and bread along with all the normal shit a kitchen has, flour, milk, salt, pepper, and it really isn't that bad for a halfassed not having ingredients type meal, you have to add fucktons of salt and pepper for it to not be unpleasantly bland though. It's more filling than just cooked beef and bread. Another good broke/lazy ground beef meal is macaroni po flotsky, ground beef and pasta with butter, garlic and onions.
