Appleton Estate is a good entry point to "good" rums. It's a huge difference from generic crap like Bacardi, but isn't too expensive or weird.

Spanish style rums are often sugared to death. Stay away from these if you don't know anything about rum. Check sites like this: http://rumproject.com/rumforum/viewtopic.php?t=1683&sid=fe72c7a5ebf5ae8cbac77e4e0e47c967

I'd say Mount Gay is right up your alley anon.

Appleton Estate is a classic Jamaican rum and it's pretty affordable and available. if you're near a Total Wine, anything from Foursquare (Doorly's, R.L. Seale, Alleyne Arthur) is GREAT for the money. Flor de Cana is also a good starting point

I wouldn’t start with Indian rum. Nor brands like Bacardi, Cpt. Morgan, Malibu,or Admiral Nelson.

Sailor Jerry if you like spiced rum
Pusser’s for a good golden rum for sipping straight or neat
Flora de Cana for a clear rum to mix

Not so much Third World as is New World. Every Indian rum I’ve had tasted so strong of molasses’s I wondered if I was drinking pancake syrup.

Try a rum from molasses and then one from sugarcane juice (Agricole.) Whichever ones you like branch off of those. For mixed blend fermented rum I find Foursquare and Clarendon do good shit.
Also don't listen to idiots like >>17124932 all spiced rum is literally swill.
