Not him but a lot of people just want to be not sober, in some kind of altered state of mind, and the exact substance at hand isn't especially relevant. Typically alcohol is the most readily available so they default to that. With marijuana being sold in retail stores it's simple enough to just get stoned to sate your urge to depart from sobriety. For me personally this is not 100% effective but it does help, I can smoke weed every night and get drunk about once a week instead of getting drunk every night.
