No, you retarded ass dipshit, nobody considers it pretentious or expensive. There are a ton of mustards which cost more, and anyone who isn’t a faggot underage zoomlet and does their own grocery shopping knows this.
Did you really start this fucktarded thread just to complain about boomers?

uh, it's not. but to answer your question that's called marketing. the fact that you think that (inaccurately) means the marketing worked

Some foods can be considered classy even if they aren't expensive.
You simply don't see some lower class everyman sip wine, eat dark chocolate or choose dijon instead of plain mustard.

I prefer the harsher stuff generally. Standard yellow mustard is only good on burgers. Pic rel transcends a normal sandwich into an experience. Though it is admittedly harsh so sometimes I bitch out and go with the Boars Head brand which is much sweeter while still keeping a noticeable bite.

Oh and to answer your question, marketing.

Before Grey Poupon, Americans basically only had French's yellow mustard. Then they made a silly TV commercial where a guy in a Rolls pulls up to another and asks if he has any Grey Poupon. In every market where the commercial aired, Grey Poupon sold like crazy. It was the first "specialty" mustard, and following its success there are now countless varieties of mustards on American grocery shelves.
