Whiskey is actually not that great. If you want vodka, drink soju. If you want whiskey, drink single malt scotch. If you want wine, drink boxed wine. Before someone calls me an alcoholic try it yourself all the advertised brands taste terrible and if you want something smooth just go for something cheap and not actual garbage, like high priced whiskey. You can even try tondistil whiskey yourself and will find its just trash.

thees a historical reason why whiskey got big in america, corn being the major staple.
and apples.
there might be something with access to sugar cane .
might be something about prohibition.

There are a couple good whiskies in there, but most are mediocre. It almost looks as if someone who knew nothing about whisky just walked into a store and picked the first thing off the shelf, then did that again multiple weeks in a row.

whiskey whiskey whiskey...
why does everyone seem to love whiskey more than any other distilled drink here?
i'm not just shitting around i'm curious because i'm not 21 yet and i have no clue what any spirits taste like, except for cherry bounce which i liked but couldnt tell what was in it
from what i've heard whiskey described as it burns the throat and is painful to drink, but then on the other hand i've heard people liking how rich it is in taste
also whiskey starts off similar to vodka but becomes distinct after aging?
but why whiskey over rum or brandy which sounds nicer
and why do people not like to drink sweeter drinks but then will go and be fine with drinking soda

>whiskey starts off similar to vodka but becomes distinct after aging?
fermentation can be very similar but whiskey is usually distilled in a pot still which lets more stuff through and is less commonly filtered or re-distilled leaving a lot more flavors in it, then usually barrel aged until the alcohol content drops to around 80 proof, which can take years. Vodka is usually distilled in a column or fractional still to remove just about everything but alcohol and water, then it's often re-distilled and/or filtered to remove even more, then watered down to whatever proof they want to sell it at. There is a lot more variation in flavor in whiskey than vodka.
>but why whiskey over rum or brandy which sounds nicer
It's probably down to accessibility of ingredients, you need more specific climates to grow grapes or sugar cane than grains. Also in america there's probably a lot of cultural inheritance from scots and irish immigrants who were familiar with making whiskey.

i dunno you can make an easy brandy by adding a smaller amount of fruit and a large amount of sugar and it'd probably taste good, whereas grain needs to be malted and you have to have several pounds of it
its also more expensive to get the right taste

>list of whiskeys
no specification as to bouron, rye, scotch?
>at a reasonable price
price is based on region, reason being subjective.

i recommend you get to know you own palate and buy a couple/handful of variety of bottles and spend time with them individually and then once you know them by heart start comparing them 2-3 at a time to make the differences more distinct. after that its just research, but even then it can be hard to sift throught the bullshit because of the boom of online shills.

it will seem like most things are good generally, which is partly true as actually bad whiskey is hard to just stumble upon. things with media/celebrity tie-ins are generally avoided because its usually overpriced swill not meant to be drank. most pop up distilleries from the last 5-6 years should be highly suspect.

once a bottle reachs "allocated"/unicorn/trophy status consider it a meme, especially with bourons. if you're in an ABC state, good luck.

Balvenie 12 Doublewood(if you can get it for under $65)
Edradour 10 Distillery Edition
Glendronach 12
Loch Lomond 12 or 18(heard good things about the NAS)
Benriach Smoky Ten/Curiositas
Ardbeg 10
Kilchoman Machir Bay
Bunnahabhain 12
Douglas Laings Timourous Beastie NAS
6 Isles
Glengoyne 10 or 12
Glenmorangie 14 Quinta Ruban
Glen Scotia Victoriana
Glenallechie Cask Stregth 10
any Compass Box Blended Malt under $80

if your on a serious budget like sub $40 Pigs Nose and Sheep Dip are supposedly quite decent considering the price and if you can find them Aerstone 10 Land Cask is peated, Sea Cask is not. if you have a Total Wine, Scarabus and Smokehead are generally well reguarded as well as the Hamiltons Blended malts.

if you're confined to supermarket scotch then Glenlivet(stick to the 12 Double wood or Illicit Still) or Glenfiddich(12 or 14 Bourbon Barrel)are fine, but wont be that great.

Not sure if you're under age b& or not. But if I had to give a non alcohol example I'd say get yourself a bottle of moxie or a dark roast coffee and drink it black. Then compare it to a coke or the swill McDonald's pretends is coffee. Both examples won't give you the flavor of whiskey. They will both have complex flavors as compared to the more common drinks which are fairly neutral. Which is a charm whiskey can have being that it absorbs flavor really well. On the flip side good vodka is seen as having no flavor or extremely subtle flavor. Rum can have complex flavors but it's mostly a "sweet" spirit. Tequila is actually a good competitor in the complexity department. Brandy is best described in my mind as whiskey without the bite.
That's the other half of why whiskey is so loved. It's hard to explain in non-alcoholic terms but if you've ever chugged anything carbonated it's an uncomfortable sensation but not necessarily a bad sensation. The burn you get from alcohol is obviously different from carbonation but much like with spice your body can react positively to discomfort. And no other liquor seems to be able to deliver the same amount of "discomfort" that whiskey can.
All that being said well I really enjoy drinking I personally suggest you never pick it up. It's a horrible habit, a waste of money, will make your skin look like shit, make you fat, cause you to make dumb decisions, and can ruin your life if you're not careful.

Herbal liquors and grappa are even worse.
