Hennessy is really a basketball american tier liquor. There are so, so many other cognacs that are better, cheaper, and more sophisticated.

They don't taste alike. St Remy is really great for the price but despite being French it doesn't have that Cognac nose or flavor profile, and neither does Armagnac.

I would actually say Courvioisier VSOP is the best bang for the buck for what you are likely to find on the shelves. I wouldn't go for anything cheaper that says Cognac on the label because then you're getting into VS territory which tend to be rough around the edges and even slightly bitter sometimes.
