Pike Place is indeed a fucking terrible roast, and it baffles me that it's their default. They do have actual coffee nerds working in their bureaucracy, though, so you can get a decent cup, you just have to work for it. I've never had bad coffee made by their clover machine

is basically your question. I think the answer is obvious.

As someone who's from the Seattle area and has a sweet tooth, I think Starbucks is alright. You can get a better coffee for cheaper elsewhere, even if you're into the overly sweet frappucinos.

The biggest thing Starbucks has going for it is 1. the fact that their gift cards are a go-to present for a lot of people since almost everyone likes coffee or tea, and 2. the branding; not only does it work as a status symbol, but the mascot is a cute siren.

Pike's like the worst of what's acceptable. It's a cup of cool-grey blazer with thin lapels - hold the keffiyeh. Mildly acidic without being too light or citrusy, lightly charred without being too ashy and dark, oily enough to avoid being watery, thin enough not to coat the mouth. They've definitely got better choices for a flagship product.
