I was never a big fan of turkey for the holidays. The only turkey I actually care for are spicy or bbq turkey necks.

I always go to my aunt's and usually bring something I've made or my fiance has made. Last year was orange cranberry sauce. This year, I dunno....was thinking of homemade french onion dip for an appetizer or maybe some roasted Brussels for serving with dinner.

yeah it was good.

I first made a fresh herb compound butter the night before, then stuffed chunks of it under the skin, and the rest on top. Then regular basting throughout the entire roast time to keep things moist and covered in juices and butter.

You're right, the ham, maple brussel sprouts, cranberry, candied carrots, honey butter biscuits, then dessert. The biscuits can be plain but that doesn't excite me, or maybe sub for corn bread. The brussel sprouts could be switched out for green bean casserole - or better yet green bean gratin. A pumpkin and green bean gratin together in the same meal seems excessive but the pumpkin is essentially like a smooth custard while the green beans will be whole, so at least they won't seem incredibly similar at the table.

I typically have a family dinner with one of my childhood friends and his family as mine never celebrated thanksgiving. Honestly I don't feel like doing it this year, his mother won't shut the fuck up about the election being stolen and everyone descending from aliens and other stupid shit. Saw her a couple months ago when she needed some help moving some things and told her to shut the fuck up and haven't heard from her since lol.
I'm probably just gonna lay low and order a shitload of japanese food and just mellow out at home this year.

I plan on spatchcocking the turkey this year. I don't expect much of a change in flavor, but it'll be a fun talking point. Fun in the sense that I'll enjoy the fact that it'll bore the other members of my family and disgust my sisters, but they'll have to suffer it because I'm the gracious cook.

I've also got the stuffing recipe from my grandma, so that'll be a treat

already got it planned out, we are a big family (I have 11 siblings, 5 are married, both parents still around, 4 nieces, 3 nephews, and some other extended family and family friends are probably gonna come around) the food is going to be spread around for who is cooking what, I am on dinner roll duty, normally we have 2 turkeys, 1 roasted, 1 deep fried, so far we are planning for,
green bean casserole
sweet potato casserole
ice box dessert
7 layer salad
corn casserole
pecan pie
pumpkin pie
mashed potatoes and gravy
I almost feel like there is more but we went over this a couple weeks back and I got my dish to make so thats all I really need to remember.

turkey neck is good meat, and generally cheap too, but because of the vertebra it can be time consuming to get it all.

got a good laugh outta me, but yeah spatchcocking is the way to go, though I've only done it with chickens, the skin just gets so nice and crispy, it cooks faster, and it doesn't get as dry from when I've tried it, I might suggest we do the turkey that way this year, though its probably gonna be a bitch to cut out its spine.

from what little I've seen the turkey shortage is more a UK issue as they can't get enough workers for the farms so production is down, hopefully its not an issue over here.
