You can eat it with all of the things you posted, if you want the british chipshop style you need to make thick cut chips like steak fries. The fish is usually served with a lemon wedge, mushy peas is very traditional but I like it with fresh peas. Tartar sauce is fine and malt vinegar is a preference thing and usually you have it on the chips where I come from.

If you want a good batter I would recommend using some english ale in it.

okay, what is the SECRET to getting fish and chips to have the consistent fish and chip flavor of scampi fries? I went to a few chippies recently and it seemed like most of them were missing that hard to pin down flavor especially in the chips, only two places i went by the seaside were closer to the scampi fry flavor. As other anons have said, at a chippy takeaway here you wouldn't get tartare sauce. However if you went to a sit-down fish and chip restaurant, or a pub/restaurant that serves (usually bad) fish and chips, you could get it then.

Love the OB t shirt. If you are up in Clairemont area check out Mr Fish and Chips next to Blarney Stone. It's great because it's next to an Irish pub and ran by Asians who bought the place in the 90's and kept all the tacky decor.
