Is there any way to lose weight as an alcoholic? I've cut back from wine to vodka with Gatorade zero but I still can't seem to lose any weight. Gained 50 pounds since the pandemic started

>> No.16916833

Some people can drink a lot and stay skinny while others can only stay thin if they cut back on the booze. I should know, I tried to convince myself for years that I could lose weight without giving up alcohol but the only way I was able to consistently lose weight was to cut back on the alcohol use.

I used to be able to lose weight while drinking in my early twenties but now in my early thirties I have to cut out alcohol almost entirely to lose any weight. So I don’t know. I think you have to ration your consumption pretty severely. Drink sparkling water if you like beer.

drink on an empty stomach til you black out each time. your primal urge to eat won't override the debilitating effects of the hard liquor til after a few days when you can barely move and feel like something is very wrong. just have a stash of food you can crawl to since walking will be hard at that point, slowly forcefeed yourself while lying on the floor, then get back to drinking for another few days and repeat. I used to order jimmy john's and slide the money under my door and tell them to leave it there, then pull myself up by the doorknob, unlock/open the door, drop back down and drag the sandwich inside, closing the door and bracing it with my body til after I ate and had the strength to relock it. the whole process goes a lot smoother once you've done it a few times and establish muscle memory so you can autopilot better. you'll want to stock up on liquor for the first cycle then restock once you restore calories and are full so you're not tempted to get extra food while out. you'll also save money on alcohol since you'll get drunk a lot quicker on a super empty stomach, so that's pretty cool.

My grandpa stopped eating so he could drink more. You get drunk really easy too when you have nothing solid in you. I never got to meet him because he died before I was born, but he was apparently very skinny. Made it to 74 or so, too. WW2 vet. Sounded like a complicated person.

I've prolly put on 25 to 30lbs over the last two years since i started drinking more often out of boredom. Shit sucks, I know it's just all the empty calories from beer and vodka but I'm just so fucking bored lately. It's also the only thing my room mate and I do together besides argue so it's also used for that.

Man I wish I could find something to fill my time so I would stop drinking.

In the same boat as you. I drink so much that near 100% of my calorie needs are supplied by vodka alone. I dropped the mixers even and just dilute it with cold water. Now I am terrified to feel numbness in my hands and feet constantly, a bit of research shows this could be nerve damage caused by long term alcohol abuse. A diet consisting mostly of vodka will leave you severely malnourished. Of course you have enough calories but not enough nutrients, especially some of the B vitamins. Of course the advice is always "just stop drinking" which is not very helpful. But to mitigate harm you can also take supplements, B6, B12, and folate.
Alcoholism is a shit situation, try your hardest to escape it.

>> No.16918436

Its very difficult. I have managed to lose weight while still drinking but only by obsessively counting calories and limiting the drinks a lot. Also I just gained it all back when I started slipping back into the bottle.

Your liver metabolizes both fat and alcohol. When there's alcohol in your system it will stop processing fat. Alcohol abuse also causes fat to build up in your liver, so even if you do start to lose weight you won't see it on your body until your fatty liver clears up. If you've been a heavy drinker it will take about 6 weeks of abstinence for your liver to get back to normal assuming its just fatty and not all scarred up. At least this seems to be how it worked for me. I started to lose weight around two months after I quit drinking.

If you're on a reduced-calorie diet and also drinking, you need to make sure you're getting your B vitamins. Please just grab a B complex supplement and take it daily. The consequences of a deficiency are irreversible and can be worse than death. After that, you might have to pick between booze and solid food for some meals. Calories are calories.

similar situation here. gained about 25-30 lbs in the last 2-3 years from daily beer and occasional whisky or bourbon. recently switched to boxed wine since it's cheaper.
i recently went a month without drinking by simply having no money in my bank account or on hand. just handed over my finances to my parents briefly. there was a desire to drink the first day or two but without cash i couldn't cave in. usually when that feeling comes i go buy some booze.
went on vacation and had $100 leftover when i got back and been drinking daily since. after this box is gone i'm hoping to last until thanksgiving without drinking.
