Let's settle this once-and-for-all. Should you put good whiskey with a couple drops of water or leave it neat?

Here's how you do it.

Taste some without any water first. With experience you will know if you will enjoy your whiskey better with or without water.

Add a little water or dont. Enjoy!

You can coax a different experience out of higher proof whiskeys if you add a little water, so it may be worth it to just explore the spirit more thoroughly.

This.
Fuck you, OP.
The fact that you even want reassurance that you’re enjoying whiskey the “correct” way shows you’re “enjoying” it as a fashion accessory.

I agree with this guy. I've had some whiskeys taste better without, but then some I didn't care for neat get completely transformed and have their flavor open up with a few drops. Experiment.

There are cask strength whiskeys that has higher alcohol than the standard 40%, where the producer waters it out. Now if you have 56% cask strength whisky, then it's easy for that much alcohol to overpower the taste. In this case, it can be good to put some drops of water in it.

Some whiskies goes well with a couple of water drops, in my experience: Laphroaig or JW Green. As for others, it's an afront and it ruins the whisky (Lagavulin, Talisker, Bowmore...). Maybe some of the higher grade (60%abv and above) whiskies need a bit of water if you're not used to the strength.

Ice directly ruins all of them, too much water when it melts.

Oh boy...
>>16914993 This. Some are basically made to be watered down a bit, some are a little sweet in their harshness, which works great with soda water. Some overproofed ryes and scotches are good with an ice cube or two, sipped slowly so that the ice has melted before you're done. This method basically works as its own palate cleanser - the amount of sourness, smoke and burn changes as the ice melts, so that by the time you're going for a second or third snoot, the burn is a fresh experience again.

I prefer ice. I know it is wrong. I know it is sacrilegious. I've been given a lot of shit for it in bars. Long story ... I'm fully aware that I'm watering it down. This makes it harder to get some of the more subtle and nuanced flavours and aromas. I'm aware that I'm cooling it down, making aroma overall harder to detect. I know that I am 'spoiling' some of the intensity certain spirits are famous for. Thing is, I find the alcohol burn on most 'overproof' bottlings to be unpleasant and I need the dilution otherwise I'm not going to drink them. I could use water yes, but I still prefer ice. Why? Choice. I can sip my drink before practically any ice has dissolved and get the almost neat or the teaspoon of water experience that nobody would have a problem with. I can continue to sip my drink as the ice cube melts and get the experience of further dilution too if I want to let it go further. I can take tiny sips which warm up almost immediately as it touches my lips and tongue. I can hold the spirit in my mouth and let it warm up, I can hold the glass in my hand and let it warm up. There are basically a bunch of options and choices I can make as I enjoy my drink that make it practically indistinguishable from having it with water instead of ice. The one thing that is denied to me is the full sniff at room temperature at full bottle strength. I have to make do with the hand over the glass swirl and then let the glass warm in my hand if that isn't good enough. Thing is, if I feel I fucked it up I can always have another. I'm describing what I do for sub $100 bottles that I would buy and drink. I'm not going to put ice in some once in a lifetime rare shit that came up from a sunken ship etc.

Short story I don't give a fuck what assholes think. I'll drink how I want. I'm aware of the issues, I just understand what is going on and can deal with them thanks.

Do whatever the fuck you want. These threads are simply an excuse for anons to achieve a sense of superiority over drinking and shilling for the popular opinion.
Whisky wankery is the same as steak wankery. They don't enjoy the whisky with or without water/ice because it's actually their preference. They just drink it that way because it's what assholes think is "proper".

It's all up to the drinker and what they think tastes better. Some people drink whiskey on the rocks, some like it neat, and some like it with a few drops of water, and some prefer COCKTAILS, and some prefer to be even gayer and just don't drink it at all.
