Lime juice, sugar syrup, egg white, dash bitters, ice, shaken. Vodka is always an inferior/less interesting spirit with a superior substitution in almost any drink for me. There are times when it is useful, to bring up the alcohol content in another drink where another base spirit would take it out of balance, when you want to make 'something' boozy but you don't want the complexity present in even something like white rum, but this is extremely limited. I generally keep white rum around/open for that purpose.

I'll check it out thanks it is the same price point.

I'm not expecting a punch in the mouth with ridiculous complexity from a rum barrel aged speyside brand owned by pernod ricard. I'm expecting a step up from pic related which I'm just about to finish which was half the price and a bit plain for me.

My understanding is all the whiskey being discussed is chill filtered and contains caramel colouring so we are already around a certain level. I did used to try and enjoy more extreme whiskey, but I think I approached it the wrong way round, too soon. I prefer sweeter less complex malts which I expect to get bored of eventually.

I think you'll love Oban.
It's quite sweet; very honeyed. It's definitely not on the extreme end of flavor or complexity, but at the same time there's definitely more going on than with your typical Speyside. The first thing you taste is a bit of ex-bourbon barrel char then you get the flowery honey, and everything is quite balanced and lovely.
It's not a flavor bomb like an Ardbeg or A'bunadh but at the same time it's not lacking in flavor.

I like whiskey from Islay. They have an intense smoke and pete aroma which can't be found in many other foods and drinks. Furthermore good whiskey offers an bouquet of vanilla, chocolate and flavors of stone fruits and red berries which would be too overwhelming as an entire dish, but are ideal if you intend to sip on a whiskey over a period of time.
The reason why smoothness is mentioned so often is, because many whiskeys have too strong of an alcoholic burn, diminishing the experience.
Unfortunately you need an advanced vocabulary and a vast culinary knowledge to convey the taste and appeal of whisky. Tasteless simpleton therefore have a hard time to convey their experiences and therefor fall back to the easily understandable smoothness.
I hope I could

I always enjoyed whiskey, but only mixed with lemonade. I used to like bourbon too, but always with coke. As I got older I found it easier to take it stronger and stronger until I found that most 37.5% or 40% bottling were fine neat. You then start to seek out different flavours. The stronger ones I tend to prefer with a little water which usually makes them sweeter to me. Otherwise I sometimes feel like I'm trying to swallow heartburn. Don't get me wrong, I still find some whiskey challenging and even the easier ones take a long time to drink, but they are drinkable. I'm not going to shit on some younger guy struggling to get the point of single malt. The reason why I like them is because of the intensity of flavour and the luxury of time they represent. I like to drink and I like to get a buzz, but I rarely have the time to sit for 3-4 hours with a couple of drinks, evenings just move way too quickly for that nine times out of ten. Because of this it can take me upwards of a year to finish a bottle so it marks time in quite a nice way and I feel like I experience a bottle over time in this way, each one marks a period of time with milestones and stuff, different occasions. I have fond memories of some malts as a result, like the bottle I got when I son was born, we drank with my father after lockdown and once his cancer treatment ended, stuff like that.

They can sell it as brandy. cognac is just brandy from Cognac just like armagnac is brandy from Armagnac.
America does the same with bourbon, only bourbon made in Tennessee is allowed to be called tennessee whisky.

Anyway, there's been a weird rivalry between brandy and whisky in the past century. Brandy stopped being cool in France for a while, most people were drinking Scotch instead. Even in America, brandy was considered a stereotypical black people drink, like chicken and watermelon today. Apparantly, black soldiers took a liking to brandy while fighting in France.

I get that Freedom > Fairness... (can't think of a word that isn't "American's") don't understand.

They don't have to change it. We can stick with the wine tier: you should know this is a still pinot noir because it was made in champagne nonsense, for Scotland. But nobody should be copying it.

>I just want to pick up a bottle, read it, and have that text be true. Anything else is criminal.
So you want them to be able to say that your single grain is actually a single malt when it isn't? How is that true?

>Furthermore I'd like labels to imply the truth too
It says that truth, which is why your bottle says single grain and not single malt honestly I think you need to look into these terms some more because it seems like you might have a very loose understanding of what it means, you say you want it to actually say what it has in it, but you also want them to be able to tell you it is something it isnt? How does that make sense.

>> No.16920765

>>16920711
>you want them to be able to say that your single grain is actually a single malt when it isn't
Malt is not a type of grain. You're thinking of barley.
For that matter barley is a grain, so malted barley could reasonably fall into the grain category.

>It says that truth
It does not. "Single" does not imply anything about distilleries, in or out of context.
Malt is not a grain. So there's no point saying either.

Your reading comprehension seems low. Let me suggest a name that is truthful and implies the truth: "Single distillery, malted barley."

>>16920765
>Malt is not a type of grain. You're thinking of barley.
>For that matter barley is a grain, so malted barley could reasonably fall into the grain category.
Single Malt has always meant 100% malted barley distilled at one distillery, it used to be in Scotland a long time ago 100+ years ago that it had to be 100% Malted Barley or it wasn't Scotch and they changed that after blenders which use grain whiskey asked them to so that they could blend in cheaper grain.

>It does not. "Single" does not imply anything about distilleries, in or out of context.
It means it is distilled at one distillery and always has.
>Malt is not a grain. So there's no point saying either.
Why? There is malted barley and unmalted barley.

So let's get this straight, you want your single grain Scotch to be called Single Malt scotch because it would make you feel better? Like you had a more expensive bottle? Is that it? You want them to get rid of categories they've had for 130+ years because it would feel cool to be able to buy a bottle of 100% grain whiskey and call it Single Malt, yet all the unique single malts we have today would change because that is where all the uniqueness of the flavor comes from, it being malted barley.
