>dude get a whole chicken, it's cheaper
Is this the biggest misconception in food? It's only about 55% edible meat, and they skew the price per pound so it's an equal profit to the separate cuts.

>> No.16896059

>55%
nice bait

it's true though that from a value perspective it's better to get thighs or the whole legs. breast is overpriced so you get more bang for your buck avoiding them.

>> No.16896060

>>16896050
Maybe for meat only, but you can save a few extra bucks by making stock with the carcass.

>> No.16896064

Usually its sold at a loss to lure you in a store.

>> No.16896075

>>16896059
In my calc, you get a slight discount per pound on the breast meat, but the leg quarters were almost double the price. You're best off buying leg quarters and breasts separately unless you NEED the carcass for "muh stock."

>> No.16896076

>>16896050
depends on the prices of everything else, my local store has had thighs at .99/lb which has been the best deal
but whole chicken is still cheapest often

>> No.16896101

>>16896050
That may be true, but whole chicken are probably cleaner than parts.

>> No.16896103

>>16896050
Depends on where you live and where you shop I suppose. Whole chickens are cheap where I live, you can make stock, get chicken fat to save, organs to eat. Chicken liver gives you lots of b12. I use the necks to catch crabs which more than pays for the entire chicken itself as well.
Plus I do a better job at butchering it than the parts you buy individually which are badly done.

>> No.16896129

>>16896103
I meant pre-gutted broilers. I'm sure the ones with organs are much cheaper.

>> No.16896176

>>16896103
do you just keep them in a freezer bag until crab season or something?

>> No.16896309

>>16896176
You can catch crab year-round here. But yes, I do freeze them. They are good because it takes the crab a while to pick off the meat and I use an open trap that closes when you pull it up.

>> No.16896328

>>16896050
I buy whole chickens and quarter them. Originally it was for making stock, and I still do that, but I swear the meat is better quality than buying individually. The breast meat is almost an different thing entirely. I hated chicken breast until I started doing this

>> No.16896354

>>16896328
Are you cutting the breasts off before cooking, or roasting the whole thing at once?

>> No.16896421

>>16896354
anon is quartering them, you can tell from the first sentence

>> No.16896427

>>16896075
You'd be spending money on stock any way, so this way it's basically free

>> No.16896444

>>16896354
Before cooking. I get 2 leg quarters, 2 breasts, 2 wings, 1 back. It's very quick if you know where to cut. I usually freeze some for later and cook the rest as I need it.
The only catch is obviously it's all bone-in, so not really suitable for quick pan frying. But the chicken breast is so much better it's almost ridiculous. Since bone-in breast has better heat capacity, you can safely cook it to 155 as well and it'll hold at a safe temp for more than long enough.
Both the light and dark meat is great when cooked right (the dark is simpler, just blast it) and you can make nice gelatinous stock from the bones.

HOLD ON ERE! mate.
are you saying that of ALL The meat on a chicken only 55% of that is edible?
I think you're full of shit! A chicken consists of 100% edible meat.

unless you're too stupid to say that only 55% of a chicken carcass is edible? which is also probably bullshit PLEASE SHOW YOUR MATH.

About 58% of a whole chicken is actual meat. Factor in 5% solution (at least, some have 10%), and you can give a rough 55% figure. This matters when you're looking at a price per pound on the tag.

Ausfag here
I did the maths once (weighed everything out) and I worked out that buying a whole chicken, compared to the cost of the individual parts, I basically netted myself a free maryland + bones.

You do use your bones to make stock, don't you?

Funny story. One chinese immigrant here read from the newspaper about the Canadian Geese problem we have every summer. He bought a bb gun, went to a park where those fuckers usually chill and started shooting. He was planning of cooking with them in his restaurant. Local families didn't really appreciate this and called the cops pretty fast.
