I have to go to the next town north and they are not good, but I found that the house special fried rice is very good.
sadly if I want a quick chinese fix I need to get some nugs from wendys on my way home from picking up that fried rice. I keep a half gallon of general t'so"s in the fridge for these times
is there a better order than general t'so?

I don't go to my nearest local but my second nearest. Even though my second nearest I have to use delivery its quick and cheap delivery and my nearest is just down the street. Legit just a 3 minute walk away or so. But the second nearest is cheaper even with the delivery fee (even more so in that during covid my nearest local bumped up the prices) and you get more portions, all for the same quality food which is typical, but pretty good, takeaway chinese food.

I get the egg foo yung, chips and crispy seaweed, then my family orders (usually house special chow mein for them) and we take a portion of prawn crackers and wontons each. Usually the prawn crackers are free due to an offer they have.

Garlic Chicken
Cashew Nut Chicken

They're battered (ice cold soda/seltzer/tonic water + mix of flour/cornstarch, baking powder) & deep fried large prawns that get covered with an insanely thick & rich honey sauce made from honey (obviously) baking glucose sugar syrup (or corn syrup), Shaoxing wine and soy sauce. The place I like to use does good food at reasonable prices, but my fat ass vegetarian but eats fish lol girlfriend always wants to use a place miles away that costs a fortune where the food is pretty shit, but they offer tofu as a protein choice on all dishes.

I like salt and chilli chicken wings, beijing or cantonese sauce char siu or kung po char sui and mushroom chow mein. I'm partial to crispy fried beef or chicken with salt and chilli or even crispy squid occasionally, but if I get that I might get the chicken wings in a sauce so I've still got the disgusting sugar syrup component. If I'm going all out and maybe we are eating with friends I might float crispy duck or pork yuk sung to share.

We rarely get chinese now because it just turns into this debate as to why I won't pay twice as much plus a huge delivery fee to get half as much food of a much inferior quality delivered cold so she can have 2oz of plain tofu squares on top of her mixed vegetable chow mein.

The place I like comes with wok hei, everything is rich and flavourful with authentic ingredients in the sauces, fermented bean curd kicking off, the mushrooms are always a mix of nice oriental varieties, always delivered hot, large portions, they usually throw in free stuff too. The place she likes tastes like they make everything with shit from the supermarket, comes in depressingly small sizes, like their char siu kung po pork is just regular pork in a mixture of ketchup and brown sauce with 5 spice powder. The chow mein has tinned sweetcorn in it. It always turns into this ... you don't respect my choices as a vegetarian bullshit which has nothing to do with the objective quality or cost of the restaurant and more to do with her being a typical vegetarian but eats fish coonsumer. Like .. trying to make more sustainable choices, but drive your ass to starbucks every day and the passenger footwell of your car is filled with empty pepsi cans.

What I remember about Chinese food as a young kid growing up in Hong Kong was not really that it was “bad” (which it often was, of course) but that the stuff my parents ordered for us was almost all frozen, and that I would generally throw out whatever that they brought home. This was in the days before a proper kitchen, and there was a tiny freezer unit that could only hold what was on the top shelf, and often that was some random combination of Chinese or Indian takeout. A couple of times a week we’d have what seemed like the best of everything, but the rest of the time it was pretty terrible: a frozen piece of some meat and whatever was frozen with it, a tub of rice, and maybe a can of green peas, and maybe a can of baby corn. There was a few times in my childhood when we were treated to something really good, like fresh fish that one of the waiters brought home in a plastic bag. So for my first couple of decades, I never actually ate a lot
