Those are the worst fucking things I have ever eaten and I don't understand why people enjoy them. I have eaten this in Chengdu at least 50 times and every time it sucked. But my whole dam family/friends go nuts over it.

It's literally overcooked, bland broiled meat that tastes like nothing but is spicy. It's no different then if you microwaved some beef strips in chili oil.

This can be done with good results by microwaving on low intermittently to cook it through to desired doneness then pan searing to finish it. Kind of like sous vide reverse searing. And as microwaving makes food soft, it tenderizes the meat. Everyone makes fun of it until I serve them microwaved steak.
