Every sound change that led to languages evolving was produced by people speaking the language "incorrectly", right? The word caramel ultimately comes from Spanish "caramelo", through French. You're really already saying it incorrectly, since a bunch of English people a few hundred years ago were too dumb to say the correct (or probably incorrect) French pronunciation of caramel and ended up with a new pronunciation of the word, and "car-mul" is a further evolution of it.
